For those of you who don't read the entire thread my previous idea was to install a small safe big enough for a handgun and magazine under the teacher's desk. Teachers would not be able to open the safe and it could only be opened in the event of an emergency when a specific alarm is sounded or a competent authority remotely opens them. Obviously if you have handled firearms and have every tried to teach someone to shoot that has never shot before you would know that not everyone knows what they are doing and may think this is a bad idea. NO SHIT, I'm not saying 50yr old Mrs. Smith who has never touched a gun in her life should be given firearm with no training. Only teachers who volunteer for a specially designed course would be given the guns. You could make the course a couple of months long and make it an hour or 2 after school with plenty of range time.

A federal system to require classroom and range time in order to buy would be an improvement. It would be hard to push for, but if it went through it would be good. Also making the purchase a hassel would deter people from buying unless if they really wanted them.

I very much support that. You have to take a written test as well as a field competency test to obtain a drivers license so why not the same for a firearm?

When I took my CC class I found the information very useful and felt it should be imparted to everyone before purchasing a gun. You should have to prove you are aware of the laws, protocols, etc as well as prove you can load and fire a gun downrange before being able to purchase one.

California does not require range time, but we do have everything else on your list. The seller is required to walk you through the function of the gun etc

we have a written test with a card that expires after a number of years, and a 10 day waiting period.

I do not know exactly, but I believe nj and ct have similarly strict laws

I don't necessarily disagree, but the answer to your question is because keeping and bearing arms is a right, and driving is a privilege.

Good point... but voting is a right and you still need to register to vote. I dont think taking an exam and a quick shooting test is infringing on your rights under the 2nd amendment.

We register to vote so the Gov knows that we indeed do have the right to vote. I'm sure they use those figures for other things as well. I don't really have a problem with this process as long as it's intent is to:

1. Ensure you are a US citizen, (have the right to own a gun)
2. Make sure you haven't been convicted of a crime which revokes your right to own a gun.
3. Checks your mental health back ground if any exists. (This will of course open up a debate about a persons mental health back ground when they were a minor.)
4. Is not used to track purchases of firearms and ammunition. (if you've cleared the screening process, there is no need to keep track of what we purchase)
