Mustang GT500

Just saw Need for Speed which features a heavily modified GT500. I was curious on owner's thoughts/experiences with those cars?? It sounds great and starts at like $55k according to google. Would I buy it? Depends.

The chassis is completely outmatched by the engine. I don't have any first-hand experience, but from what I've read, it's a bargain if you're looking for a stoplight racer. The gearing is suited for spec sheets (e.g. 1st will take you into highway speeds, so you can hit 60mph without shifting). It's a cheap ticket to get into something with 660+ bhp. I'd rather have a Boss. Don't know what I'd do with all of that power.

I love mine it's just a raw beast.
Hood is opened in the pic because she was going into storage.

There has also been some debate if that is in fact a Shelby in the movie or not.

Read this article on the car for a true unbiased review. Those who say bad things about the car I guarantee have never driven one.

Interesting. That car sure did look like the real thing to me. However, having 600 hp in America seems pointless unless you track the car often. Is the interior any different from your regular mustang?

Because criticizing a product = "your facts don't real shithead"? I'm sure it's a fantastic car, and if you enjoy yours that's great news. It's not without its flaws. I'm looking forward to hopping in a Mustang but no car is without flaws.

Cleaned this up a bit. No need for calling someone a name if you don't agree with his opinion. Carry on.

I got to drive a convertible GT500 a number of times, and like what was said above, I was surprised at how long the gearing is. At the end of 2nd gear, you're going about 80mph. Obviously you can opt for the shorter gears, but regardless, the torque it puts out is amazing.

You have to get used to shifting in this car. It's very notchy, and you can't just slam through the gears with the same ease as these BMW's. Another thing that bothered me was the live rear axle. Hitting a bump while going through a turn will unsettle the car a bit. It's hard to describe, but instead of the suspension doing a single compress and rebound, there is some additional jiggling around after you hit a bump like that.

Could it be used as a DD taking into account the ride and noise?

I see people in Calgary driving them in a few inches of snow with snow tires on. Not sure I have the patience for it, bit it can be done.

Definitely. The stock exhaust sounds very nice. It has a nice rumble and roars when you get on it, but doesn't have any drone making it pleasant to cruise around in.

Obviously, you can't really DD it in the winter unless you had winter tires.

Owned a heavily modified Saleen for awhile putting out about 500 at the wheels. Cannot imagine what 650hp (crank) would feel like. Would love to drive one of the 13/14 GT500s. I bet it's a blast with some very brutal pull.

Big fan of the outgoing Mustang generation, and looking forward to the incoming. OP if you have an opportunity to drive one, do it!

If you can afford a new one, I'd at least waiting until the new one comes out. Should be far better all around.

New one is not coming till 2016 as a gt350. Will definitely out handle a 13-14 around a track with its irs but rumor is it may be a little more tame with a tt 5.0 coyote. There will not be a svt mustang in 2015.

I just read this tonight as the guy just posted it. It really sums up what his car is about. It's not a car for the masses.

I saw one today. I don't know if he wanted to go at it, thought I was cocky, wanted to impose his car's authority, was in a rush, or was just a prick. I was took a detour through Griffith Park and it was empty so I was going a bit above the speed limit. Then I saw this guy's pair of headlights suddenly zoom up behind me. He tailgated me for a looooong time despite my attempts to generate space (speeding up a bit/taking some turns quickly). I would've let him pass if there was space to pull over. He only stopped when I too was blocked by a 100% law abiding civic.

It's a very nice car. It has street authority. I can tell right off the bat that it's a beastly car.
