Thumbs down Lexus IS-F: Weak

WEAK!!! No power in the part of the curve that matters. This engine is meant to put around town with torque way down low.

I guess this means it fits the driving habits of the majority of buyers who would cross shop this car with the M3.

Those eight gears will get plenty of use keeping the engine in its power band, so there won't be much of a problem with keeping the car moving. If the torque curve stayed flatter past 6k all the way to 8k RPM, then you would have one heck of an engine. It's a little difficult to get a large engine to scream at high RPMs without the vehicle costing a lot more to make up for the additional technology, or sacrificing the bottom-end to get big dyno numbers that don't translate to an enjoyable driving experience.

But this is just it...the torque curve of this engine suits partial throttle driving....WOT and mass acceleration means a falling torque curve.

I wonder why it can't breathe at high rpms?

The 8 gears are narrowly spaced, so it just short shifts to the next gear, therefore keeping it in the power band. What they didn't achieve with the engine was brought to life with the transmission. This is why big-rigs have 10+ gears in their transmissions. Even with a narrow power band, the trucks can perform well because they have a transmission that is constantly shifting gears to find the right ratios.

The end result is a vehicle that performs very well. Still, it's ugly...
