It depends.

Synchronization- Apple wins hands down

Apps- Roku wins mainly because Apple won't allow Amazon Prime Video yet.

Simplicity- I don't own a Roku, but my two Apple TVs are extremely easy to setup. It takes longer to enter in a router password than it does for the setup.

To put it into perspective, I'm an Android/Google fan. For the past 5+ years I laughed at Apple fans and the propriety of Apple devices. Against my will, I find myself buying more an more of their products.

In this case, I'd recommend the Apple TV even without trying the Roku. The primary purpose of a media streaming device is simplicity (otherwise you'd buy a computer or use your xbox). Apple certainly tops the "simplicity" category.

Roku's are easy to deal with and have a pretty good remote control app for iPhone and iPad available. Configured one using it last night. Really easy.

Have the Apple TV and love it but can't honestly compare to Roku having never used the product. For me, it's Apple's simplicity but I doubt Roku is any more difficult. Having been an Apple user for years and tied into their ecosystem for music etc, the choice was clear for me. If you're not tied into Apple, I'm sure Roku offers a comparable product. Both my old Samsung TV (just died) and my new Sony TV have built in functions (SmartTV) that offer many of the same things Apple TV does like Netflix, Hulu etc...

You can Airplay Amazon Prime to your Apple TV. It works great.
