Working at a Hedge Fund?

I have a question about an opportunity that is coming my way in the next several weeks.

I have been approached by recruitment for hedge fund in NYC and they are very impressed with my resume. This is a sr. systems engineering position that would have me focus on systems virtualization and other heavy infrastructure work. So its not the tradition money manager role but more on the IT/ engineer side.

My question is.. Has anyone ever worked at a hedge fund in this type of capacity before? I'm not asking about how hard the money managers work or how much they make... I'm looking at it strictly from an IT point of view. The position offers a great salary and would be a big bump from where I am now.

What's the culture like at these places? What can one expect? I do not come from a finance background but they want to take a chance on me due to my heavy engineering experience.

Any input is greatly appreciated. Thx

It depends on the fund. I've worked in high finance for 11 years but I have nothing to compare it to. There are funds with horrendous corporate culture (one notoriously so) but for the most part they are fine places to work.

(Down)Time is literally money there. I'm guessing you are good with redundancy.

Sure. I do storage, application redundancy, HA, and disaster recovery sites. But being a finance environment, I'm sure these guys take it to another level.

How does one working in corporate finance get into this "high finance"? Seriously...

I once thought about masturbating in a bank. Does that count?
