the main reason why the porn industry went HD-DVD rather than Bluray is licensing issues....

Sony will not allow the pressing of pornographic material in the same factories that press regular content... it has nothing to do with quality or market...

besides, the porn industry is moving more towards online distribution.... no need for stacks of sticky mags and scratched dvds....

Blu-ray Players Top 2.7 Million

Washington — The Blu-ray Disc Association is having a Blu – not blue – Christmas, according to sales figures it released Monday.

The group reported Black Friday sales “were decidedly Blu” for both hardware and software, accounting for a total sell-in since launch of 2.7 million players in North American households as of Nov. 24.

Although the announcement did not break out sales by device type, the total count would include sales of Sony PlayStation 3 video game consoles that all include built-in Blu-ray Disc drives and dominate sales of all set-top Blu-ray players.

The HD DVD Promotion Group released sales figures last week showing total U.S. penetration of 750,000 HD DVD players to date, including sales of Xbox 360 video game consoles with add-on HD DVD drives.

The BDA cited Nielsen/VideoScan format share numbers showing HD disc software sales for the week of Black Friday were 72.6 percent compared to 27.4 percent for HD DVD.

Total sales of Blu-ray Disc movies in North America passed the 4 million mark in November, the BDA said, pointing out important milestones along the way including: reaching the 1 million mark in the first 10 months of release, reaching the 2 million mark three months after that and finally 4 million two months after that.

Comparatively, HD DVD reached 2.5 million disc sales in November, the BDA observed.

Other figures mentioned by the Blu-ray camp were the following:

Year-to-date (through Nov. 25), Blu-ray movie titles have outsold HD DVD in the United States by a 2-to-1 margin.
Of the top 20 high-definition titles in the United States this year, 18 are available on Blu-ray.
Blu-ray movies have 73 percent of the European market — outselling HD-DVD by a 3-to-1 margin, according to sales data provided by Media Control Gfk International.
Blu-ray’s share of the HD recorder market in Japan is now 95 percent as of the week ending Nov. 12, according to Media Control Gfk International.
I don't see them winning already, the PS3 inflated the numbers.

I believe there are already players that support both formats.

I'm sitting this war out.

Downloads are going to win sooner or later anyway. In the meantime I can watch HD movies downloaded to my xbox 360 (5 bucks a pop) or watch/record HD on my DVR. Definitely not interested in building a whole library of soon to be outdated media.

The PS3 does inflate the numbers but this was their plan. This is how they made DVD win over Divix with the original Playstation. Now all those people have PS3's that play blu-ray discs and they are more likely to use that then go out and buy another player.

I hope it's better than the first. Their first attempt was crap, and it was over $1000.

Or maybe it was because Divx was mind-numbingly retarded to begin with. Anyone who bought players or disks deserved everything they got.

Bluray has an advantage with the PS3, but in Europe HD DVD has something Bluray doesn't offer - HD DVD is region free, Bluray isn't. a lot of europeans import movies from the US because you get them earlier and they cost less in the US.

that said, i own a PS3 and thus hope Bluray win.

I think having both it's the way to go - Blu Ray is probably winning the race (more titles available, and more people renting, and Blockbuster offering mostly only Blu Ray at their stores) - but HD-DVD still has many exclusive titles.

The reason I only have HD-DVD it's because I bought the XBOX 360, and then for $200 I got the HD-DVD player.

I've been considering Blu Ray - however the cheapest player is still at around $400 - for that price I can get a Playstation 3 that plays Blu Ray!!

My other problem is that my 5.1 Onkyo receiver has only 2 optical inputs (I'm using one for the Cable HD tuner, and the other for the XBOX) - what's the point of having one Blu Ray and normal sound?

Run the cable HD tuner on any other audio. You'll never hear the difference, and get BluRay. The advantage of an optical in for audio is if your codec in the receiver is better than the player, AND you're feeding the optical signal right off the disk into the receiver. In the case of the cable box, you're converting it to optical, sending it to the receiver, then converting it back to voltage. Just use a digital coax connection, or even the RCA's. I run my surround sound off my digital cable box using digital coax. It's generally considered better than optical, especially if your source is not optical (your source is coax). If your box doesn't have digital coax, take it back and get a newer one from the cable company. Should be free.

With all these HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players all around, is there a need to get an appropriate TV to go with the setup, such as a 1080p LCD/plasma? Or a 1080i will suffice? And what about A/V receiver?

well if your in the market for a tv why not get a 1080p? that way when the 1080i is outdated you have the latest to start with. most blu-rays i believe are 1080p or it might just be for planet earth. spider man 3 i believe is 1080p too on bluray. the "p" really does make a difference
