e39 m5 or 335i?

Hey!

I own a bmw 325i e90 today and feels that it aint so fast as i want it to be! So after the summer i think i will try to trade mine to another bmw or possbile an audi. What do u think i should look after? I like the 335i because of the tuning possibilities, but the e39 and e36 m cars are something special. Any brand u think could be in intrest of mine, enligthen me.

What do u think is the best option for me?

In the meantime educate yourself by browsing on M5board.com. While the e39 M5 is a great car, it requires lots of attention for keeping it in tip top shape:

MAFS have to be cleaned every 20k miles (no biggie) but replaced every 60k.
Has four (4) CPS sensors that can go bad.
VANOS solenoid boards tend to go.
Rod bearing issues on a majority of them.
Carbon buildup issues.

If you decide on a e39 M5 get one with service records and have a PPI done. Can you turn a wrench? E90/E92 335's have their issues as well so service records are key. Research in the e90 section as I'm sure you're familiar with.

Are your needs 4dr or a coupe? AWD or RWD?

i dont touch my 325i, too much plastic. but got a volvo 940 turbo that i fix with. So thats why i feel like i want an older vehicle. So u can do something by yourself. Dont really know how much different a m5 is from an e90 though. Maybe i should look more towards e36?

Awd, rwd doesnt matter. Neither do 4dr or coupe. Been looking at subarus and evos too but feel weird going from 3 l inline 6 to a 4 cylinder 2 l engine... :/ dont really like cars from japan either way, thats why ive been looking towards audis.

if you want to tune then 335i


if you want a drivers car and something different and an actual M NA high reving motor get the M5, no question

M5 is gonna cost much more to maintain. Better long drive car. 335i can easily and cheaply be faster. Depends what you want.

E39 M5 all the way. A classic and they are becoming more valuable. Don't let the maintenance deter you. They're pretty solid cars and all cars eventually need more TLC as they get older. A 335i is meh. The M5 has more then enough power and is a drivers car. As mentioned before. Depends what you're looking for. An icon or a wannabe.

I don't think you should get either for reasons i wont push. But the e39 was an epic M5. It was the essence of the ultimate driving machine.

How are they as daily drivers? are they possible to be used as it during 4 months a year? which is summer here in sweden. is it 1,5 l/m if u drive friendly with m5/m3 and 335i?

unless your 325i is an XI i don't see the difference other than feathering the throttle in the e39. Daily driver wise e39 is a different car that e9x.....

If you decide to go with the E39 I would strongly urge you to inspect the timing chain guide rails.

They are known to disintegrate and collect in the oil pan and the rest of the engine. For fucks sake what a pain in the ass job! It's a nightmare. Just Google it.

This is an old car now so be prepared to get your wallet dirty and open your hands.

Having winter driven an E39 M5, I can attest that it is possible with a good set of winter tires, but not ideal. Prepare to replace the rears every year and the front plastic underskirts.

The M5 truly is a special car. I've never driven another car of that size with those driving dynamics. I had one for 3 years. I personally had no issues, just maintenance. You need to by a proper example from a good owner. I modified it just a bit and daily drove it for those 3 years. It's so easy and fun to drive.

The 335i in stock form is just a normal car. Nothing special about it. If you plan to modify a lot, you can make something special out of it. Unless you get an LCI with Idrive and nice color combo I wouldn't bother.

Not an M5 because you will help to drive prices up and I want an E39 M5 in a couple years! Anyway enjoy whatever you decide to buy.
