I religiously follow http://www.theflightdeal.com. It shows airline price war and deep deal fares.... In the past year, I've been to Toyko for $410 RT, Bejing for $459 RT, Sydney for $489 RT, and I use upgrade certificates or miles to get up front.

Even if my work would pay for Business class for flights like those, I wouldn't spend company, or my, money like that (wrt your $16k example).

Actually long haul business class food is pretty good and would be a waste if you didn't take advantage of all the F&B. Yes most of the time I'm heading to somewhere pretty awful. To me, its kinda like going to a cruise ship and trying to enjoy every second instead of sleeping thru the entire thing.
