I read this post and it reminded me of how much I lovied my E39s. What a car.

Keep it as long as it makes sense. Hard to justify extra cars, but a properly cared for E39 is worth more than what you can sell it for.

I had a 2003 540 with M-tech package. I'd probably still be driving that gem if it didn't get demolished in a wreck. It save our butts though.

I'm keeping mine.... my torque converter went bad in my tranny. Sourcing a used one. Thought of getting an M5 but the amount of sentimental values I have for mine isn't worth getting the 530 parted/scrapped/sell... I even planned to get a 530/5 but doesn't make sense.

Good for you for keeping it. I thought about an E39 M5 too, but, plug your ears, the power was more than I would ever use. So, I got a 2003 540 with the m-tech package, which included M trim, lowered, a 3:15 differential and other goodies which make the car much more sporty than the '97 E39 540 I had before it.

I went on cars.com and found one for you Go get it! The only downside the car I found is the owner or previous owner changed out the zero on the trunk with a 5 to make it a 545i. I guess this was to make it look like the E60 numbering. Just another example of douchebaggary.

It's true but the E39 M5 is one of my dream car. All your points are true. I've wanted a Topaz Blue 540/6 M-tech. If I ever find one of those I'd buy it in a heart beat.

Hahah, it is really clean! But it's an auto, I want a 6spd. But that car is so CLEAN
