Arrow Dackel tours Merks Motor Museum & Ofenwerk...

Merk's...

Why is it that we often will over look those places right in our own back yard, but yet we will drive hours & hours to go explore a new places/towns. I must have driven past this museum many times... yet I never found the time to go visit it. Merk's is located right in my own backyard(so to speak) being located in Nurnberg(just two hours North of Munich).

Btw... Nürnberg is sometimes spelled: Nuremberg. It should not be confused with Nürburgring, which is some five hours away on the other side of Western, Germany!

I had heard of this small little museum, but I had never made the time to go visit them. Well... a few weekends ago, I found the "time" and boy was I glad I did! This place is my kind of museum!! Small, but filled with lots of interesting and diverse "stuff". Sure there are lots of cars(I think over 100 or so) but they also had a ton of old accounting adding machines and early computers and lots of typewriters and telephones. Everywhere yu look I found cool car related "stuff". And also a lot of stuff from various periods back in era the cars were built. I think this museum did a nice job of displaying all the various cars and other cool "stuff" from those yester-years.

The Auto Museum is only open Thursday thru Sunday! Its more of a hobby Museum - but they did have a nice little gift shop.

I really enjoyed this museum. Its not a fancy museum(the floors squeak as you walk thru the old (former)factory - but I found lots of interesting cars and mechanical things inside. Did I mention I really liked this museum!?

The Museum also does catering events held in their rather large lobby. Its a cool way to have a party. I think they also hold old 50's and 60's dances here. The place definitely had a soul to it.

MERKS MOTOR MUSEUM
Klingenhofstraße 51
90411 Nürnberg

tel. 0911 56149499
www.merks-motor-museum.de

Price: six euros for adults, three euros for kids.

Note: Merks is located on the corner of Pirnaer Strasse & Klingenhofstraße - you can park at that corner to go into Merks. For some reason Google Maps thinks you have to enter the "lot" 100meters down the street. I just parked at that corner and walked inside the open "gate". You can also drive inside and park next to the museum.

I really didn't know what to expect from this place. To me, when I looked at pics from Google Maps and on FB, the place looked kind of looked small. It is not. They had a lot more cars than I thought they would have. I was expecting to see about 45 cars. I bet they had at least 100 cars - probably more. I know I spent three or so hours here. And I felt like I could have gone back and seen more hidden gems(that I probably missed). The place had a lot of cool things to see - automotive wise. It is places like this that I just LOVE to visit. Its a simple museum - basically one man's collection of cool cars. But its ever expanding and its all tucked away from prying eyes. You have to know about this place - otherwise you'd never find it. I like that.

Most of the car's were driver's - you could tell these were no garage queens. I think that's really cool about this collection. You could tell the cars are loved - but used.

Also one should note IF you plan to visit this museum... just down the street is another car related "storage" place for classic cars. It's called: OffenWerk. I would recommend you visit both places. More pics of Ofenwerk at the end of this thread.

So grab yourself a nice coffee and sit back as we stroll thru this awesome car collection. The place is run by a bunch of car enthusiasts - I just found this place charming. I know I took a lot of photos... but that's what I do.

Well... onto my(many) pics. Enjoy,
Dackel

Dackel, looks like a really cool museum. Takes me back with the Opel Cadet (think it is that, Cavalier in the UK). Is that an HF Integrale?some great examples! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for taking us with you - as usual! What a great museum. I wish I knew about it during my recent ED, but I have it marked for next time.

It's funny this thread popped up in my feed today. Just yesterday I was driving past Merks & Ofenwerk and thinking about the many cool cars here.
