EV propaganda ... most likely aimed at potential BMW 3-Series owners. It's not the first time Tesla has aimed directly at BMW's 3-Series, while not bother mentioning the likes of Audi, Lexus and Infiniti. The best part is Chamath Palihapitiya has absolutely no experience in the automotive industry.

These Silicon Valley tech guys are so used to selling investors by unsubstantiated fluffery comments ... they think everyone will believe them because they said it. Whatever. Kinda like how Chris Sacca stated on Shark Tank that UBER will take over the need for people to own cars (he's a major investor in UBER). - which totally ignores the fact that their company is dependant on people own cars.

These shows are the equivalent to the Monday morning qb comments you see/hear on sports tv/radio shows. Total hyperbole to grab attention and headlines.

Tesla has made large strides into the automotive landscape, but they aren't even close to dominating the 3 series marketplace.

Production hasn't come close to a level to fill newly placed orders within 360 days, let alone 90.

They also have significant hurdles to overcome that have nothing to do with the strange Saturn Ion inspired interior, upcoming loss of federal rebates, and range anxiety.

The most important of those is simply keeping them on the road. So far Tesla has sold expensive niche vehicles that mostly are owned by people of means. This means the vehicle is not relied upon on a daily basis to provide transport or can easily be replaced if out of service. Telsa has a limited footprint and my concern is they will struggle to get people in loaners and repair cars quickly. I know a Tesla owner that had road debris damage the windshield of the car and what followed was a 2 month odyssey where they didn't have a spare windshield and the car sat. Luckily the family's car to driver ratio was >1. Even when it was replaced, they used an older gen windshield that had a downgraded front camera. As a result they took the almost brand new car back at a decent trade in value for a brand new Model S (what kind of backwards logic is this).

Customers buying a $30-40 something thousand car aren't going to always have spare cars sitting around or the free time to drive 60 miles out of their way to a service center authorized to work on their cars.

The idea that the Model 3 out the chute will take over all car sales in it's segment is completely laughable.

I love what Tesla is doing and forcing other automakers to step up. I find the biggest irritation are the Tesla fanboys who overstep what Tesla is and what it can do. As if buying one is an easy decision compared to all other "low tech" ICE vehicles.

The 3 series class is obviously a tough class to dominate from a pure volume stand point. Can Tesla build enough of them to dominate and even absorb this market before BMW and Benz have better competitors that is perceived having equal or higher status? I doubt it but I wouldn't make a bet.

There is little doubt in my mind that the Model 3 will put enormous pressure on the 3 series if it will start at $35k as announced and they are able to generate enough volume. I'm skeptical to both but BMW better take the threat serious.

It's the status that can make Model 3 such a threat not the range etc. It's the it car among the status crowd.

Electric car is all about infrastructure and battery life.
It will take fairly long time (10~20 yrs) to get enough charging station everywhere.
Not to mention the charging time needs to be within 10~20 minutes.

Also, when we the last time those "analysts" were right? never.

It is already.
Unless you charge from 90-100%, then you need an extra 30 mins, but nobody does that.

I think there is some truth to the article, but it will only be temporary for a couple of years until BMW comes up with an alternative. Then they will grap some customers back from Tesla.

I'm one of those that have had only BMWs for 10+ years, but was "forced" to buy a Model S because after driving av EV I said to myself I would NEVER again buy an ICE car and with 3 kids I needed a bigger car to complement my i3.

Also, remember the typical 3-series buyer is not anyone of you guys here on this forum

Win them back? Tesla has to win them first. The car isn't even made. Let's see where this ends up in 3 yrs. My prediction is tesla getting out of the car business if it survives.

We will see how many they convert to orders. That's yet to be seen. And the response to the styling, coupled with the wait, loss of the free $7500, and lack of blistering performance, and the fact that an optioned one is over $60k will change that rapidly I bet.
