I stumbled across the tacoma world forums when doing some research on the new 3rd gens. Talk about a massive enthusiast following for these vehicles!

With the MT, we haven't encountered any drivability issues. We were bombing along dirt BLM roads at up to 60 mph on Monday to get back from the eclipse in WY, and didn't have any problems. I've heard of AT issues, but with the MT that's not something we're worried about. |

Yeah, with the MT it is not as pronounced, though I have noticed a few times. For example, being in 2nd gear at 3000 RPM feeling good power and acceleration, then other times being in the same gear and RPM feeling a lack of power no matter what I do with the throttle. According to that tuning company, the stock ECU tune is doing some odd stuff with the throttle meaning it may not respond as one would expect. I've had some bizarre rev hangs a few times too, which is one complaint people have with the MT.

A close friend of mine has a 2008 double cab TRD auto with the 4.0 V6. Great truck, but here in the North East rust is what kills them. Some of them have had the frames replaced twice around here. Because of that, any clean used ones are $$$. It almost makes more sense to buy new.
The frames are replaced under recall, but I've heard a few different stories. Some people had a tough time getting them replaced because dealers/Toyota would claim they were used in a salty environment, others had the frames replaced and left with suspension rattles, things not connected, etc. Not common, but just something to be mindful of if buying a used one.

I feel like every garage needs a truck and I would love to have one of these. Not as a DD though.

Had a 1st gen, 4dr prerunner with 245k miles that still ran like a champ. No bs bearing or tba issues on her!
Unfortunately had to part with it for a more fuel efficient commuter. Would certainly like to get into one again at some point, I loved the reliability. |
