Is there a future BMW equivalent to the Audi E-tron GT?
I've been a BMW fan for years and was planning to upgrade to the G80 M3 once it came out in the next few years.
But, for the first time, the new Audi E-Tron GT has really made me reconsider another brand. It's set to be released in 2021 which is also when the G80 will be available. Does BMW currently have anything in the works that is meant to go against that? I don't think the i8 is an apples to apples comparison since it's a hybrid. I know the E-tron is just a concept, but it just looks so GORGEOUS and very hi-tech. |

I never said I was comparing the E-Tron to the M3. I know they are for different segments (that's why I mentioned the i8). I was simply asking if anyone knew if there was any vehicle in BMW's current or future lineup that is meant to directly compete with it. Maybe like some version of an i8-like vehicle that's all electric.

I would wait rating the E-Tron GT until detailed specs are available. The new E-Tron SUV offers 400km (250Mi) range with a 95kWh battery. This means 23.75kWh/100km and is in the Tesla S range (for those who don't know for comparison: i3 is 13 kWh/100km). Press comments are not that ecstatic here.
What at least can be said already is, that the E-Trons cannot nearly beat the innovative approach of the BMW i cars. Although we have to see if BMW can hold the benchmark with future cars. With an all electric i8 (Wow, thrilling vision) the question is: When will the chosen battery cell technology (prismatic cells) allow for yet higher density. While better in terms of reliability, constant availability and long life aspects, it needs more space than Teslas mobile phone cells (which I still don't trust...). But I guess there won't be ever a pure electric i8 for another reason. BMW doesn't have further money to experiment since the revolution is now rapidly speeding up and concrete mass models have to be in focus now. So expect rather 8xx e-drive or 4xx e-drive as available sports cars. But for sure the next outstanding BMW concept sports car that is purchasable will follow sometimes in a hopefully nice and clean future. And someone finds my i8 in a barn then... No it won't. It's based on the Taycan and the Taycan is supposed to start in the mid 70's before incentives. It's highly unlikely that the Audi will be more expensive than the Porsche.

That said, there are Audi projects that are starting to bleed into Porsche's DNA, most of which we haven't seen yet. (One example of one we have seen; the digital interior displays in the Panamera and the new 992). This is evidence to me that the sharing of components major enough to be recognizable between Porsche and other VW AG brands is about to ratchet up. In other words, this is the best evidence yet that the next Cayman/Boxster will be based on the TT and will be a hybrid. In fact, Porsche has all but admitted that there'll be a hybrid next-gen 718 in 2022, if not sooner. As for BMW ... What it has planned for the next-gen i8 is the most likely competitor beyond hybridized/full-EV configurations of existing models. When's the next mid- to large-scale four-door BMW coming? The 3, 5, and 7 Series have all been re-done in the past 18 months ... the 9 Series?

Yes there will eventually be such a car to replace the 6er Gran Turismo.
But the Audi has to go through the programme E-Tron went through in 2015 from Concept to production reality.
