Greatest Qualifying Laps in Formula One
Ok...we have about 100 days until the first race and we need to fill a little time. How about recounting the greatest qualifying laps in Formula One...ANY ERA. Tell why it was special and when/where it happened. If you can find video, please embed it in your post.
Calling Poiseuille 3798j usshelena725 1MOREMOD Put your laps up. Here's my first. Stardust. Lewis Hamilton, Singapore 2018. The lap was 0.5 seconds faster than the fastest theoretical lap the computer modeling could manage. Unreal. Three purple sectors.

Daniel Ricciardo Monaco 2018
After a weekend of setting fastest laps in each session, it was just a beautiful way to finish the Saturday When we met the car to put the cooling fans in there were hugs all round between him and our car crew...that weekend was the highlight of the year and probably my favourite weekend in my career, especially after the events from 2016... Jumping into the pool on Sunday evening was incredible feeling. Redemption. |

Well, not a qualifying lap video, but a summary of the 1967 USGP. What made qualifying memorable was Friday's practice. This was the first time we camped out at the track for the weekend. We woke up Friday morning to a thick fog. If you've been to Watkins Glen, you know it's at the very top of a large hill. Well this fog was actually a cloud sitting on the track. The beginning of this video shows Clark and a Ford Galaxie in that mist. As he drives away you can see how quickly he disappears into the fog. Couldn't help but feel disappointed knowing it would be a long time before anyone would be able to take to the track to practice. All of a sudden we could hear in the distance the sound of Surtees' Honda. It's V12 revved higher and screamed louder than any of the other car's 8's, 12's, and 16's (a good example of 12's sound is at 2:20..he had just spun in some oil). We ran to the fence seeing him all of a sudden appear then just as quickly disappear. Because the air was so still and because it was only him, you could hear the Honda all the way around the track. This moment was truly goose-bump material. On Saturday it wasn't too suspenseful...a Lotus front row with Graham Hill getting pole, Clark second. This clip doesn't make Clark's suspension problem seem like any thing too bad, but it was, and the right rear wheel had a ridiculous positive camber making it look pretty darn scary. We all thought it would fail before the finish, but that's just how good Clark was. He nursed that car and brought it home. Hill couldn't find gears which prevented him from protecting 1st. I could go on (and on), but suffice to say it was one of the best GP weekends out of more than 30 some I've attended.

Funny seeing veteran drivers being intimidated by Max because Max don't a fk, don't want to give him track he will run straight through you.

3798j Nice old footage of the Glen.
We get down there every year for a couple of track days. It sure looks different in the old footage w/o all the armco that's there now.

Yeah, the track really has changed over the years. Example: The old Start/Finish line and the pits you see in the video are located right after the 90° (what is now the first turn 1, was the last turn 8 back then). Don't make it to The Glen every year, but certainly enjoy it when I do. It's a wonderful facility in a beautiful setting.

after watching Lewis's pole laps i re-realized that he sometimes misses the apex but he carries a lot of speed deep into corner even if sometimes he had to use a wider exit..
for me the best pole lap is '88 Monaco - Senna.. 1.5seconds off from Prost with the same car.. and in the race he was leading by 55 seconds till he had a crash.. i guess that was a grand prix weekend that a human being can reach that level of concentration on anything.. |

I get Senna and I most certainly get Monaco. But I was also in Montreal in 2016 when the Senna family honored Lewis with one of Ayrton’s helmets.
Watch current F1. Watch greatest laps in real time. Lewis is the best single lap executor. On any track. So far! |
