I'm from San Diego, born and raised. Currently reside here as well. I work all over the county from Downtown to Ramona and anywhere in between. I know a decent amount about this place. To give you better recommendations instead of something more broad let me know what you're into doing, interests, lifestyle etc. There are quite a bit of things to do, off the beaten path included. Generally they are interest specific, by nature. Would be glad to help out!

* = must-do in my book
Are you guys flying in or driving? Are you going to have a rental car if flying in? Do you want to go on a fun drive? O'Gara Coach(formerly Symbolic Motors) - In the heart of downtown La Jolla, fantastic high-end dealership where you can see a plethora of exotics. Saw one of the first Veyron's in the states here back in '05 if I recall correctly. * Car Meet Rancho Santa Fe - Every Saturday Morning there is a cars and coffee where collectors and enthusiast bring their cars out. Enjoy an espresso and pastry from Cafe Positano while seeing some amazing cars you would otherwise never see in the wild. Everything from an imported Renault 5 Turbo, Dinan E92 M3s, to Lamborghini Aventadors and Rolls-Royce Phantoms. ***you will see me here I always go, very low-key compared to any other "Cars and Coffee Event", generally people start showing up at 8:00am-9:00am and lasts until noon. Highly recommend if you are into cars at all, which you are*** 6027 Paseo Delicias, Rancho Santa Fe, CA 92067 La Jolla - very touristy, fun to see Seal Beach and pose for some pictures. La Jolla shores is fantastic on weekdays, not weekends. Del Mar - 15th street beach/powerhouse is a nice little beach with some large grassy. More low-key, especially on weekdays. (Don't go swimming at "Dog Beach") Solana Beach - Fletcher's Cove. Not many people know about it, very local. Great little cove to hang out and relax, just pay attention to the tides. Dedicated lifeguard station, very safe. *Torrey Pines Gliderport - Besides actually going gliding, it's probably one of the most fantastic ocean views in San Diego. Please at least stop by and check it out, it really is breathtaking every time I go. Black's Beach - Nudist Beach, avoid. *Harry's Diner - In downtown La Jolla, classic diner that has been a staple in the community for decades, if you go here you can take a nice walk about 2 miles through La Jolla over to the previously mentioned O'Gara Coach dealership. Point Loma Seafood - Fantastic, fresh seafood market. You can eat there right next to the dock. *Tip Top Meats - Best German/European market/meat market/restaurant in the county. Highly, highly recommend. In-and-Out - If you haven't been to California before or tried this, might as well. Low key local spots or high volume, loud stuff? Also depends the proximity on where you are staying. Let me know. -Sailing in Mission Bay -Visiting Coronado/USS Midway Museum/NAS Coronado *-Balboa Park Museums -San Diego Zoo/Wild Animal Park -DeepSea fishing boats -Whale Watching Tours -Legoland(actually pretty fun even for adults) Are you into urban exploration at all, or hiking? Obviously nothing illegal but I also have some fantastic rural areas to go on a nice walk/adventure.

trying not to repeat all the good ideas above...i’m not a local but have been there ~12-15 times, including a few lengthy stays >30 days for project work, and my son is now attending SDSU. this past august, i *finally* made the effort to hike pt. loma / cabrillo national monument and it exceeded all expectations. the views are absolutely incredible from the top of the hill near the lighthouse, and there’s also a great trail along the rocky ocean where you can explore tide pools.
accessibility could be an issue along the ocean trail, but just about everyone / anyone can reach the top to take in the views via paved trails. BTW pizza port in ocean beach is a great locals place with great pizza and craft beers. very low key / casual. also ballast point brew pub is right downtown.

There is nice Zoo in Balboa park with pandas (expect a line there on weekend), and Safari Park Zoo north east of the city. https://www.sdzsafaripark.org And USS Midway is a must - plan to be there early, they close at 5pm and there is a lot to see there. P.S. If you are staying in downtown, you don't need a car - Uber from KSAN is about $8-$10. Gaslamp District, Balboa Park and Coronado are reachable by foot and a boat. For places outside downtown, like La Jolla, Del Mar, Safari you do need a car. P.P.S. Just noticed your N Mission Beach stay. Well, UberX for 4 ppl to downtown, or rent a car.

San Diego may be ugly, but it's been "home" for 43 years. You get used to it.
Pics from a dog walk this week, in between rain storms…

El Prez in Pacific Beach has a great rooftop lounge. There are space heaters up there if it gets cool like the past week. Nice view of sunset and terrific Happy hour options. Carne Asada Nachos is the size of a McDonalds serving tray!
Slaters 50/50 is a great custom burger spot with a LOT of beer to choose from (like most reputable pubs in San Diego). Happy hour discounts are good off tap and Yelp! check-in gets you another $3 off your second. +1 on the "you don't need a car" if youre hanging out in the downtown area. |
