Unpopular opinion here: I actually like it.

I think that for the purpose they are meant to serve, they actually look quite nice and exhibit a multifaceted design with sophisticated design elements and interesting lines.

Compare it to this abomination of a wheel made for Tesla model 3.

I never understood why auto manufacturer's insist to put ugly wheel designs on electric vehicles, this reminds me of Tesla Model 3's standard wheels that are atrocious!

That's a good point, zooming in you can see the 245/45 20 so these are not the i3 skinny tires

Good catch. Looks like OE Alenza's with the Star. Makes sense for the iX3. My one complaint about the skinny tires is the tramlining.

Trueeee. Forgot about that... Although in my current time on this earth, I have needed 4wd ONE time, and that was to help pull my Mom out of a ditch in my Dad's Tahoe... It snows here maybe twice a year. My previous vehicle, 2015 Jeep GC, was RWD only, and I never once thought "You know what, I need 4wd."

RWD only makes it easier to do burnouts bruh.

Yeah the design on the left is much much better. Bigger wheels will reduce performance on any car but 18" to 18" is just fiiiine.

Everyone loves mentioning unsprung weight when arguably rotating weight has a bigger impact on efficiency (ask any serious cyclist). Bigger impact or not, I'm amazed how rarely rotating weight is even mentioned.

I'm not so sure considering the aerodynamic advantage takes speed to come to fruition, and rotating weight impacts efficiency from the exact moment you cease being stationary. 💡 For example, I'd bet a Manhattan user wouldn't ever see aerodynamic benefits worth mentioning; yet the rotating weight would be very much part of the equation for that user.

I'm not arguing the merits of rotating weight; as much as questioning why it always seems to go unmentioned. Any serious cyclist knows how important saving rotating weight is... Perhaps because they're the "motor" that has to turn everything!

Agreed, saying rotating weight is strictly for changes in speed only applies on paper without considering friction or other real life factors. In the case of an EV I'd say one of the only benefits to the added weight is for regenerative breaking so it wouldn't be all lost as heat. Also battery technology is quite heavy by nature at this time, leading to monstrous curb weights.

Increased acceleration, stopping power, steering feel, etc are definitely a plus with lightweight wheels in everyday driving too. (I have a set of 17" Arc-8s vs my heavy winter 18"s and it is night and day when spring time comes.)

In the case of a human powered cyclist where things are often measured in grams not pounds, I would still rather be aerodynamic than lightweight on a long distance ride with few changes in speed. Pro rider's bikes are weight limited, but that's like talking F1 rules vs autocross rules. I'd also agree a cyclist is way more sensitive to weight than a car. Also goes the same for aerodynamics and gearing. I guess I'm just saying there's diminishing returns, one is more valuable at a certain point.

A couple of calculations I've found says 1g of wheel weight equals 2g of frame weight. I wont copy in a bunch of formulas but they're out there. If applied to cars with heavy runflat wheels times 4 this would surely add up quick!

Heh, the only time in my life i'm 100 percent sure I would've been effed without AWD was when I spun my celica into the ditch while messing around on a gravel road. Front tires went into the ditch, while the rears were still on the ground and the car backed right out of it.

Buuut....I would not have been messing around on a gravel road if my Celica hadn't been AWD.
