We have a Chrysler Town & Country for travels with the kids. When it was approaching 100k miles, I had some regular maintenance done at the dealer and had some final warranty work done. While there they suggested to change the transmission fluid, and we agreed. We picked up the van, and my wife drove it for the day and then parked it in the garage. When I got up in the morning the front of the van was in a red puddle. The seal on the transmission pan didn't work. They towed it and fixed it.

Now, they never told me how much leaked out and what a day of driving with a decent leak would do to the van. Fast forward four months, and we are having hard shifting on the van. I took it in, and they said we need a new transmission. The transmission cooler as the transmission pump has low pressure and the fluid seems a bit burnt. I realize this is an eight year old vehicle with 104k miles on it.

So my question is, are these two issues related? Or at least could they be related? The dealer of course says no and that there is no relationship. I don't know enough about it and want some opinions to know if I should follow up on this issue with the dealer. Thank you in advance for your help.

Is it the ZF or GM tranny? The dealer warranty should cover it for the next 2 years if something happens to. Work is usually warranted

The problem is the dealer says there is no link between their mistake in filling the transmission fluid and the failing transmission. Thus they want me to shell out $5000 to replace the transmission and cooler. If there is truly no link, then it is just bad luck for me or maybe time to get a new van, as it is a 2012. But if the two issues are related I want to pursue that avenue. Thanks

If I understand correctly it is a Chrysler built transmission called 62TE. Certainly transmissions are not my specialty.

AGHHH i think you mean the GM one maybe what e90 is yours?

Sorry I may not have been clear in my original post. I had hoped i had put this new thread in the general section. My two BMWs are fine right now, I was actually asking for advice today on my Chrysler van's transmission.

Don't change trans fluid in any vehicle if you don't need to, ok it had 100k on it but if it's running right there is no need.Changing can dislodge gunk into the fine pressure channels that can cause problems.

I hear you. Unfortunately the fluid was already changed. It was one of those day when we were getting oil changed and warranty work done, we had kids and were late for work and either myself or my wife said sure, if that is recommend. So unfortunately the fluid was changed and maybe that caused the issue we now have. That is what I am trying to figure out. Thanks so much.

Yeah reading it again you said the trans pan seal failed and what I can gather from that is low fluid level in trans got low and wore out the trans.The garage is liable as labour and parts fitted by them are guaranteed (for a year normally) and the pan has to be removed to change the trans filter.

I agree. They are not telling you the truth, probably to avoid admitting to their error.

I would send a nice email to the general manager. If that doesn't work, I would get less nice.

You read my mind I sent the email this morning. I feel better that others feel the same way. I will be curious to see how they respond. They quoted me 5-6 k for the repair of the transmission. There were a couple of normal maintenance things to do too. I was going to replace the brake pads which they also noted, as I knew they were wearing out. There were a few other things to fix too. Thanks for your help.
