It reminds me of stuff that Singer does with old Porsche's. Not sure if I would spend $140K to build it but he did an amazing job. I had an 09 GTI and I loved that little car. |

My first car was an 83 GTI, had it for 7 years, it was the slowest but in many ways the most fun car I have ever owned. Modified suspension and great handling the fun was taking corners sliding sideways and ringing it out in every gear. I think about 2100 lbs. Too often cars today focus on 0-60 and you drive them hard less than 5% of the time because of how powerful they are (and massively heavy).

Damn that is a pretty GTI. Although counting his hours as a perfectionist into the costs of the build is a bit unreasonable I would say.
One of my first cars was a 1985 Scirocco, and it had lots done to it at the time, was pretty damn quick. Every so often I browse for sale ads...although a 16V is a much better starting point now. |

i dont think i d spent that amount of money for such a project but have a fantasy project that i want to do before i die hopefully.. and its building a sub 2s 0-100kmh Golf 1 or 2.. boring looking a real sleeper Golf like one of these.. actually this looks fancier than the one in my head but still..

I had an '84 Jetta GLI though most of college, grad school, and beyond. Not as light as a GTI, but a lot better built (Germany, not Pennsylvania). Just a fantastic car. I'd love to have another one or or an early GTI to play with.
This car is amazing - but so is the time and money he put into it. I'd be happy with a minty stocker.

I've had several Mki and Mkii Golfs(Rabbits), GTIs and a Mki Jetta coupe. All were built/modded and engine swapped. Thinking back, they were so relatively cheap to buy and mod, and so light that you didn't need hundreds of horse power to have a ton of fun. The last GTI I owned was an 84(Mki) with a 2.0 16v, big brakes, suspension, exhaust...it was my autocross and track car. Sold it about 15 years ago, wish I hadn't. But, to this day, the car I regret selling most was a 92{Mkii) 2.0 16v GTI in white. It was my daily and pretty stock except for some suspension and wheels. Loved that car so much.

It's good to see cars enjoyed and not hidden away in a garage somewhere collecting dust and appreciating theoretical dollars.
If anything, car manufacturers could learn a thing or two why older generations of cars are worth so much more than their newly minted hot garbage. |
