Bali Hai https://www.balihairestaurant.com/ Go at night. Beautiful views, legendary mai tai's
Best fish tacos you'll ever eat - https://southbeachob.com/ - very very laid back place. Glider Port - 2800 Torrey Pines Scenic Dr, La Jolla, CA 92037 - Just go there to chill and take in the view. Point Loma - You can put Point Loma Nazarene University into your GPS and cruise through Point Loma and stop along the way, I suggest early morning or sunset. San Clemente - This is about an hour north of downtown San Diego, it's a different city, it's got it's own thing going on, a nice break from big city san diego, more quaint and chill, worth checking out, having lunch and just walking to the beach. Grand View - Grandview Beach, Encinitas, CA - Great place to chill - great place to surf, won't be crowded unless it's the weekend. Wind & Sea Beach - walk south and jump off small cliffs/rocks into the ocean. Born & Raised - the restaurant your lady will love you for taking her to. Don Bravo - go for the best california burrito, then walk down to beach, get your stools outside - have your friend hold them for you while you order. |

olive cafe in mission beach for breakfast. get there fairly early and park at the aquatic center (street parking is tough in mission beach)...eat at olive's...then take a stroll along the boardwalk north toward pacific beach.
hodad's burgers in ocean beach are pretty amazing...and you gotta get a t-shirt. the place is an institution. i also really like pizza port in ocean beach...usually a great craft beer selection. hiking in torrey pines if you have the time. say "yo!" to my son if you see him fishing off the jetty or surfing at mission beach oh...and check out the pennant and/or the beachcomber if you live the divey beach-bar scene.

I would suggest the road direct through it, if you don't meant this.

Good question I am not sure. I have surfed by the light house before that was years ago, epic opportunity given to us because my friend was in the Coast Guard.

I have a running restaurant list in my notes. Most of them are in SD.
Some Highlights: Best Taco: Hands down it goes to Kiko's Place. It's a food truck parked next to USD. Fish taco and surf and turf are the best. (Promise it's a safe food truck) Otherwise Oscars. Nightlife Downtown: Kettner Exchange - dinner is good too but pricy. Fun to carry over dinner into drinks when it shifts into a bar after hours. Vin De Syrah - cool wine speakeasy. It's a club, on the smaller side. PB Bars: (College area vibe) Mavericks El Prez La Jolla: Georges is awesome but pricey. They have three levels, roof top seating, craft cocktails, and dinner. I recommend drinks on the second level. Very talented bartenders and they have a drink made up for every neighborhood of SD (just have to ask the bartender for the book they made). This, then going and seeing the seals down the street is always fun. Beach: If going to a beach in La Jolla go to Marine St. instead of the shores. I live in the shores, it's an absolute cluster **** on the weekend. I prefer Cardiff and Encinitas beaches as well. Less packed. Encinitas is fun to walk around as well. Hikes: Torrey Pines is a nice easy one. Ho-Chi Minh trail in La Jolla Farms is tough, but a cool trail down to the beach. Monarch in Del Mar is new and has a cool deck. Good drinks & view to watch the sunset. I haven't tried the food just drinks. The waitlist for dinner is brutal. Thank you all for the suggestions. We just got back from our San Diego Trip and it was generally a success. I feel like this should be a thing where if you're asking for recommendations for things to do in a specific location, that once you've had a chance to visit, you provide pictures and reviews of the things you've done.
So here's my super long post about our San Diego trip inspired by all of your suggestions. I'll preface this with saying, I wish I could have visited all the places and eaten at all the restaurants... but with a very opinionated 4 year old and a pregnant wife, I had to succumb to their wills. We stayed at the Hyatt Regency mission bay spa and marina. It was a pretty nice property, very resort-like vibes. The rooms were decent, pretty large. Amenities were awesome, great pool area, nice gym (which was empty for most of our stay so I got it all to myself ). My rental car for this trip was a Porsche Macan GTS. For an SUV this thing handles amazingly well, great steering feel, and it looks good too. Not as quick as I was expecting, but still plenty of power. It's not something I'd trade a couple/sedan in for, but if we needed a small SUV, this would be a great option.

Day 1
Our 1st breakfast of the trip was at Fig Tree Cafe which had some GREAT food. Highly recommended. That day after some pool time and just relaxing at the resort, we visited sunset cliffs. The views were spectacular against the ocean. Definitely recommend visiting it. That evening we had dinner at Curryosity which is a sort of Indian-fusion restaurant. The food was excellent - some of the best Indian food we've had.

Day 2
We took a morning tour on the San Diego Seal Tour, which is basically a bus that becomes a boat. My daughter REALLY wanted to go on a boat ride so we figured this would be a fun way for her to experience it. It was decent... lots of fun for her... I could do without it personally. We walked around Seaport Village which had a lot of shops and stalls, visited some food trucks, and eventually made our way back to the resort. That evening Santa came to visit and they had a snow machine to really make us Midwesterners feel at home . Daughter loved it... she's old enough now to really enjoy this type of stuff.

Day 3
Had breakfast at Great Maple, another awesome spot with great food. And they had beignets! Later that afternoon we had lunch at Crack Shack - some really good fried chicken sandwiches. Later in the day we went to Coronado Beach to hang out and watch the sunset. I'm amazed at how huge and open this beach was. Regardless of how crowded it was there was just SO MUCH space that we didn't feel surrounded by people. I'm sure it helped that we went in the wintertime. That night for dinner we went to Puesto for some tacos. Some pretty unique tacos here. Can't say I was a big fan of the chicken, but the filet mignon tacos were awesome. I'd go back just for those. Also had a tres leches cake that tasted more like tiramisu.

Day 4
We spent a good chunk of the day at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, which is the San Diego Zoo's sister site. It's EXPENSIVE (~$60/person for general admission plus $89/person for the actual safari tour plus $20/person for the balloon ride). But it was worth every penny. This is probably our favorite zoo we've been to, and the safari tour itself was awesome getting so up close to the animals. That evening we had dinner at Buona Forchetta for some Neapolitan style pizza. I personally enjoyed the fried pizza, but my wife complained it was too crispy. Otherwise the other food was great, the calzone was good. The dessert we had, which I don't remember the name to, was a little weird... That's pretty much it. Great trip and sad to be back to reality...
