Winter wheel/tire advice?

Hi there-have my M240X on order. Spec'd the 19" non-RFT summer/performance tires. Dealer says car will be ready in February. So either this winter or next I'm going to need winter wheels/tires.

Has anyone put winter wheels on yet? If so, what wheel tire size(s) have you all used? Nothing on TireRack yet-too new.

Has anyone put winter tires on their stock 19's yet? Considering that, though 19" is a bit big for a winter tire. Smaller/narrower work better in the snow for all you sunbelt types.

If you put winter tires on your stock wheels-what did you all use for replacement summer wheels and tires? Sizes, styles, etc.

These are deeply existential questions for me. Any advice and pics would be welcome.

I dig your passion for tires...they are always critical components that affect ALL the three dynamics of driving; going, turning, stopping.

I got my 230i M Sport and immediately upgraded to 255/35-19s on all four corners with Michelin PSS. These, as you know, are not good for cold temps and worse.

So, I am working getting a whole other set of wheels/tires. The winter set up would be on 18" wheels (should still clear the M Sport brakes at 340mm). Tires of choice are Michelin Crossclimate2 in 235/45-18. Pretty much the same diameter and very well rated. These are just for the depths of Winter temps and any snow, but I live in Northern Virginia, so snow is less the issue and more temps below 40 degrees. Thinking about skipping the TMPS too. I think for your 19" rims, you'll find tires that'll work, but I hear a flexible sidewall aids in cold and snow driving, so I plan on the 18" rims.

At any rate, this is my plan and from what I hear, Crossclimate2s are awesome.

As you noted, tire size is critical too, so I went with 235 as a nice middle of the road performance without snow on the road, but still narrow enough if there is some. Again, goal is to put the 255 summers back on right away.

I forget the thread, but someone had posted pics of their new car on 18" winter wheels/tires.

Message from the "old world"...prior gen 2 Series....205 or 215 with 17" wheels with Blizzak WS90 are very high winter capability for the most critical stopping and turning, as well as the convenience of getting moving. There are 17s that fit over our blue MSport brakes (Tire Rack can confirm). Don't know about your new platform fittings, but just FYI and best wishes!

I just searched Tire Rack for a 21 330i w/msport brakes and the smallest they offer is 18". Perhaps the brakes are larger on the G42 compared to the previous 2-series.

I was cheap and took the path of least resistance and had matching size Pirelli Sottozero3's mounted on my factory 19"s and have the unmounted pirelli Pzero's in my junk room at the work. I appreciate not everyone has this luxury so wheel and or tire storage isn't always a good option.

We do not get much winter precipitation in Asheville like areas farther north but the temps are certainly cold enough that driving on summer tires is both dangerous and bad for the rubber. I did shop for some ultra high performance all seasons but the availability choices were poor and ultimately if I do get snow, all seasons are not always great.

225/40/19 front and 255/35/19 rear.

Please forgive the dusty wheels...

Possible, but don't know if the 3 Series is the optimal surrogate, even though G42 is sharing the CLAR platform now. If you search for an F22 with MSport brakes, you will at least find the BBS SR (or similar) which I have over my MSport brakes. I had some more basic same-size TSW for winter. Again, not sure if that translates to G42, but worth checking or a phone call to Tire Rack for better winter performance. (No, I don't work for/with them...just highly reliable folks over there.)

(Those are blue MSport brakes under the paint-matched Valencia Orange.)

Not sure I can forgive those dusty wheels

Looks like you can get he Sottozero, Blizzak LM32, and Michelin Alpin's in the stock 19" size. I've had the LM32 and those were a very good snow tire.

The bead seal issue with swapping tires 2X a year can be an issue long term. But it's not the end of the world. Summer performance tires only last 20,000 miles anyway.

I would recommend being careful about assuming the F-series wheels fitting the G-series.

If I am not mistaken, BMW changed the bolt pattern to a 5x112 for the G-series vs a 5x120 for the F-series.

It would be relatively a safe path to go the route of G20 if you are looking for wheels and tires as opposed to the F22.

That assumption was not made. The posts were to the contrary. The G20 may suggest a larger diameter than necessary.
