The move to EPS was to aid fuel economy and now dovetails with all the new driving/parking features. The fact is Americans have always preferred overboosted steering and probably in other countries as well.

....only a 1/4 mpg.

The electric steering in my 2016 (non-competition) M3 was HORRIBLE. Just simply dreadful.

Just one model year later, I found that the steering in the M2 was dramatically better, so I bought one!

Having recently purchased an e36 M3, I can say that it is more communicative. But less weighty. e36 / F87 ... 2 different technologies, but both fairly effective.

The sweet spot does seem to be the M2CS, and I'm holding out hope that BMW puts those lessons learned into the G87!

It's really unfortunate; although the F22 could've done with a shorter greenhouse and less upright back glass, those traits are also what make it a genuine sedan substitute. That's no longer the case with the G42.

TL;DR: none of this matters, one has a stick and one doesn't
One wonders if there is a stillborn F22 Gran Coupe prototype hidden somewhere in the dark confines of their secret Giftschrank garage.

Yes, lot's of things that go into road feel. That being said, as many here have posted, other manufacturers have electronic steering AND good road feel. That electric motor is governed by software, with input from sensors. It is tunable, and the tuning chosen by BMW is - according to the opinion of many here (including me) - less than optimal. It is not what we expect from 'The Ultimate Driving Machine'. It is not what those of us old enough and/or with long enough memory, experienced with previous BMWs.

It's a shame. That along with size creep. From E36 to E46, to E9x coupes, to the 1 series (perhaps the epitome of a great driver), to the F22 and now the G series.

There's no manufacturer that is pushing BMW to excel in this class.
