Sirius XM Renewal - You can negotiate

After several years of having a Sirius XM subscription in my vehicle, I just recently learned that you can negotiate the renewal rate. They wanted to charge me $320 (total including taxes and fees) for a 12 month renewal of my Platinum service. I called them and threatened to cancel, and they gave me a "Special 12 month offer" for $130. It will go back to the higher rate in 1 year, but I plan to call and threaten to cancel again next year. I wish I had known this years ago.

That's just like dealing with the cable company.

Btw, the best thing I ever did was buy two lifetime XM subscriptions in 2002. I still have them and I think I paid $400 for each one 20yrs ago. Winner. Winner. Chicken dinner.

No offense, and I truly don’t mean any disrespect but have you been under a rock for 10 years? I have up on Sirius after Stern faded out and they are still calling trying to give me a membership for Pennie’s

Hate to burst your bubble but you can do even better than that. $130 isn't a great deal either. Tell them with absolute certainty that you're walking away and they'll give you a $5/mo. deal. That's what I have always done for years. Truthfully it's a serious PIA to have to go through it every 6 months or 12 months but it definitely saves money. I just can't believe you had never attempted to "negotiate" much sooner.

Make sure you are comparing the plans and features correctly.

My plan is about $90/ year after I called and negotiated, but it is at least one tier up from the basic plan. I have more Channels than the basic, and IIRC I can use XM on 5 devices (maybe more?). I have the XM app on my iPad, iPhone and my wife’s Android phone, and of course in my car. At home I pair it with a Bose Revolve speaker to get better audio.

Bottom line - they make it really confusing. Arguing and complaining always gets you a price reduction and/or a better plan.

Hey we all pay too much for certain things. I’m sure his intent wasn’t to come on and get bashed…let’s support our Bavarian brother and lift him up, you’re on your way to a good deal. You’re not there yet but you’re on your way.

I would call back and be like WTF, the guys on Bimmerpost say $5/month damnit

I’ve got Sirius in three vehicles, $5/month on each, best rate.
They want charge more on renewal I tell them I’m canceling and ask for best rate.

I have always managed the $5/month rate. My last renewal, on my M5, they wouldn’t give it to me and allowed me to cancel the service. Blown away. So I used the steaming app and the login from my wife’s account to keep using it. A bit of a pain through CarPlay but fine.

5 days later I got a flyer in the mail, 3 months for $2. Not a typo, $2. I signed back up, guess I’ll see what happens in 3 months.

I renewed my wife’s X3 and they told me it had gone up to $6/month.

2 days later I got a flyer for $5/month.

I like Sirius but the business model is screwed up. It should be like $10 a month for x number of radios. I have 4 cars, a bike, and a boat that could all run XM. But I’m not paying for individual subscriptions.

All you really need is one subscription that includes streaming and then stream everywhere.

I think it should be $6 (or less) a month for a household. Wife and I both have it and we pay $6 a month each.

I finally canceled Sirius XM service after annual renegotiation dialogs. The 'please return' offers are even better than previous renewal offers. However, at this point I don't see a reason to return.

Satellite radio is one of my guilty pleasures. You have to call and negotiate. Great for long trips or commutes. My kids like the hip-hop stations and I like, well, my stations pretty sure I paid 80 bucks for a year subscription nonrenewable with expiration date

I renegotiated at $5 per month but we rarely use it since we use Amazon Music in the car. Subjectively, much better sound, no DJ babble, much better selection, AND I'm already paying for it with my Prime membership.

Then why don't you cancel it if you don't like it and not waste your money?

Amazon Music HD is even better. It costs a bit more but worth it. Huge catalog and more importantly (to me), the sound quality is great.

Possibly, but he said he's already paying for it with Prime which doesn't cover HD.

Nope. Just to clarify HD means CD quality or better (aka lossless audio). AFAIK most music streaming services don't offer that, certainly not Sirius XM. There are only a few that do and they are usually quite a bit more $$. Amazon Music HD used to be more expensive but they lowered it to $7.99/mo.

https://www.amazon.com/music/unlimited/why-hd

EDIT: They've changed the name to "Amazon Music Unlimited" which includes HD and Ultra HD.

Hmm, sounds good. Then I pose the same question to you: why pay for SeriusXM if you have something better? Why not just cancel it?

Because I'm getting it for free right now. When I bought my Bimmer it included one year of service. Furthermore, I also like Sirius XM because of the variety of stations it offers and I can stream it anywhere. It's only 5 bucks so it's not a big deal.
