HK audio & sunroof question

Is it worth getting the HK audio option? What exactly do you get, is it just speakers, speakers+amps, or speakers+amps+better radio? I am considering opting out of this, and installing better speakers eventually. But if I am getting a better radio with this package, then I will go for it.

Is the sun-roof able to be deleted in the U.S.?

it's likely better/more speakers, as well as more powerful amplifier for the last gen 2 series https://www.harmankardon.com/bmw-2-series-coupe.html it was 360 Watt and 12 speakers.

and no i don't believe you can delete the sunroof, as it's standard equipment in the US, but it's certainly something to ask a dealer about

More speakers, better speakers, and a much more powerful amp. It’s 14 speakers and I believe 450ish watts. FWIW I have it and it sounds excellent, I don’t plan to change anything.

I’d note that the amps in these things are pretty complicated and not easily replaceable (it’s a module called the RAM that handles several other functions). Something to consider if you’re counting on “change it later”.

The subs are standard but I assume the HK system gets better ones. The subs were included in that 14 total speaker count (2x subs, 7x midrange, 5x tweeters).

The standard system loses all of the tweeters and I think also two of the midrange speakers, for a total of 7.

Thanks guys

That's a bummer about the sunroof, I saw a video on youtube, I forget which country it was, but it didn't have a sunroof and it looked awesome. Not the end of the world, but I'd prefer to not have one.

I've always had nice audio systems in my cars and am hoping to possibly add a real subwoofer. Is it hard to add a subwoofer amp to the factory system? Do the electronics have audio line-out? I assume you can tap into the factory amp trigger. It's a good start that battery is in the trunk.

I added subs to my F22 and Supra. You can get a wiring harness that makes it fairly easy.

I don’t understand people who spend $50,000+ on a car and won’t pay $700 to option the premium sound. It’s the dumbest thing imagineable. So yes, get the HK.

You can do a moonroof delete on a 230i but not the 240. I ordered a 230i w/ the moonroof delete to shed about 50lbs and also save about $800.

Thankfully In the UK the sunroof is an option and not standard as that's the last place I would want extra weight on a car, I suppose it's each to your own though as I'm sure there are many who are happy they are getting a sun roof as standard.

I'm surprised they don't give you guys the option to delete though 🤷🏽*♂️

The HK system increases from 360w in the F22 to 464w here (adding 2 additional rear speakers as well). From what I've heard, the reviews are decent for all but bass-heads if you adjust the EQ.

One method to improve quality is to just replace the speakers with more efficient ones off the stock (highly integrated) amp. Others that want more bass focus on the tiny subwoofers under the seats.

Upgrading the amp and adding real subwoofers is much trickier and expensive. In the 'old' days without integrated headunits, it was a much more straight forward route, but unfortunately that's not the case now.

I have HK audio and pretty good after you dial up the bass & tone the treble down a bit. Well worth the $875 in USA

I would option the HK. The value is great and you get 14 speakers instead of 10 speakers.

I'm pretty sure my HK was deleted and the stock system is underwhelming. I'm going with BimmerTech and Alpha One speaker complete kit $1,279 + Alpha One amp $1,349 + installation $$$.

Basically, Alpha One $3,000+ vs Harmon Kardon $875 and no hassle (US pricing)

Picked up my M240i this week, it has HK and I think it’s the dog’s dangly bits.
Much better sound than the standard system my 2020 Z4 had, plenty base and no distortion in sound

According to the builder the HK system is a 600w, 16 speaker system. Then according to the specifications the base “HiFi sound system is 205w, with 10 speakers. So an increase of 395w for the HK and 6 extra speakers.

The issue is there is a shortage of the audio module for the HK upgrade and a lot of cars are stuck at the port

I may just option it, and add a sub in the trunk at some point. Could also replace the speakers with nicer ones by matching size/impedance, assuming they are mediocre.

Bummer about the sunroof, but oh well, I haven't had a sunroof in years and I guess it can be cool to have one on a nice day. I don't care about the additional weight, I just think it looks sleeker without a sunroof.

HK audio is just fine. Sounds better than an M5 HK and similar to a G80 HK. This being a 2-series, don't worry about it at all. Case closed?

I wouldn't take anything on the builder page as gospel, it wouldn't be the first time they've had an error on there. The system in the 3/4 is 16 speakers (two additional tweeters) and I suspect they just reused the text.

BMW's own press release announcing the car (see stickied post for PDF, page 12) says the HK is a 14 speaker, 464 watt system. I counted the speakers in my car and I think that's right. I don't have the hifi system so I'm not as sure about that one.

I believe it's 14 speakers as well. When you upgrade from BimmerTech with the HK system you get 2 additional mid range and 2 additional tweeters compared to the HiFi system. Those speakers are located behind the rear seat below the rear glass. I don't see where 2 additional speakers would fit in this vehicle with any practicality. BimmerTech also include a diagram of speaker placement.
