How does this Scam work ?

If you pump 1 gallon or 999 gallons, surely the meter says, you pumped 999 gallons and you have to pay for it ?

Or the pump and run ?

Don't get it

I would have thought so but it appears some are not.

Why don’t the stations just limit max of 50 gallons or so? Anything more make the drivers go inside first and the attendant approve the purchase

The video above says they just open the covers on the ground to access the fuel holding tanks and pump it out from there. Not sure how they could "scam" the actual consumer pump to give them free gas. Also many already limit you even when paying with a card to $100. Happens to me all the time when filling the truck which take a lot more than $100.

I actually saw on the news that there is a scam where the perp hangs the nozzle up on the wrong side of the pump. When the victim swipes their card the perp waits with the proper spout in their tank. Once the person pulls the trigger they do also. Once they stop filling the perps tank they hang it up since it stops their meter. The perp then takes off. Stolen tank of gas and the victim doesn't know till they start their car...if they even look at the fuel level. Crazy to watch the video.

I missed that part. They’ll just have to make the tanks more secure moving forward I guess.

They just busted a ring outside Tampa. Guys were filling construction tanks in the bed of their pickups and paying pennies on the dollar using those devices.
Then the had bigger tanks in storage trailers and were selling it for $3/gallon to locals
