Misaligned body panel. How?
Today I was walking out of my garage and noticed what look to be a strange bump on the rear quarter panel. I never noticed this bump before and thiught it was odd that it wasn't aligned perfectly. I checked the opposite side to make sure it wasnt a defect, and sure enough the opposite side is perfectly aligned.
So, my question is... How can a car that's only 5 months old have this issue? I wash and wax it myself and never noticed it before. I do live in Texas and it's been 110+ daily for two months... So not sure if something just gave out because of the heat? How would I even fix this? It flexes when you press it in. . If i can figure out how to load a video / giphy I will. Also happy 4th! |

Hey Steel. That appears to be the junction between the quarter panel and the rear bumper cover which is made of a molded polymer and reaches from the rear of the wheel well on the left side of the car to the rear of the wheel well on the right side. Polymer bumper covers are usually held on with a series of clips and/or metal brackets. The cover may have shifted or slightly loosened at that junction you are flexing due to the extreme heat (sun) on the dark paint. You should ask your dealer to look at it and see what they can do to it. I believe the body shop can probably make it better.

That surely isn't normal and shouldn't be. Hopefully the dealership will step up here.
BMW puts these cars through serious stress testing including extreme heat exposure so this shouldn't be a design issue. What I have noticed on the handfull of G42's I've seen is that the gap on the rear quarter panel wasn't equal from the wheel arch back to the tail light. It might be unrelated to your issue but I feel there might be some slight body panel issues that just make it through QC... don't know if anyone else noticed this. |

Yea, but other than that I haven't seen any other QC issues. If anything it's better than my old M2 with interior noises.

For the record, I'm totally on board with the México plant. Latest and greatest tech etc. First production of anything is bound to have QC issues. My dad was a pilot and said "never by an A model". I still never learn lol. Most major manufacturers are having issues in general with the state of the world as it is. |
