anyone lift outside during cold winter
Since covid I've been lifting dumbbells outside on my balcony. Even with temps in the upper 90's and high humidity I'm liking the experience.
I run in the winter, wash car in the winter so I'm looking forward to continuing to lift in the winter. I'm trying to gauge how lifting will be with temps around freezing and wind rain or snow. Anyone lift in a unheated garage or even outside in the cold ? |

I lift outdoors in the winter all the time, no issue. SOMETIMES I even wear a sweatshirt with my shorts.

I'm from relatively the same area, York PA, so about 45 mins north of Baltimore. So I've had plenty of winter workouts in that climate. Interesting that you run faster in the cold, my lungs would always be a little more fatigued. Hardest thing about getting a solid lift in the winter is getting the body to a solid temp. I'd start with a 15min run then get into it that way your HR is up and body is loose.

Are you referring to muscle tears when you say "...goes stiff " ?
Lifted dumbbells (weighted vest push-ups) outside all last winter: in freezing rain, snow, sub-freezing wind chill. Began every session with static stretching - never any issues there, and maybe some jumping jacks or standing alternating knee to elbow crunches. I doubt I'll ever go back to a gym membership. I know I'm not lifting as heavy but I'm way more cut and my running is better and I'm never getting any injuries. |

If it's too cold I never get a full pump. Not for me. Too old for that shit.

As long as my gym or home has heat inside....nope. Same reason I eat my dinner indoors, because I bought a house. Same answer I give people when they ask if I want to go camping. Camping is something I did as a teen to get away from my parents for a night of drinking and tom-foolery. I didn't buy a house to go sleep outside on the ground.

make sure you warm up properly, otherwise youll end up with an injury. add some extra warm up sets to the beginning of your workout and depending on how you lift, throw some high rep/low weight sets in the middle of your workout if you dont do a lot of higher rep sets.

Yes, absolutely. If you lift in cold weather, just be sure to get a good warm-up. It will be harder to get up to temperature and when/if you sweat, then you can get cold again quickly. If it is below freezing, then you might have problems with touching the cold metal.

I think what you are proposing is doable. My only suggestion is to use your run for the warmup prior to lifting. Getting a good stretch and the muscles pumping is very important to avoiding injuries while lifting. Also assess what your goals are from lifting such as maintaining or building of muscles. Enjoy your work-outs.

It's awesome that you're staying consistent Caravaggio, inconsistency is what usually gets ppl to quit and revert back to the "old- them". And in reality there's no real difference to lifting in the cold vs lifting in the heat other than being mindful and listening to your body more, (which you should already be doing). Your body will give you certain clues in the wintertime that it didn't give you in the summer time, like I need a longer stretch/warm-up period, etc. (Kinda like aging does...). Eitherway, Stretch, Warm-up, Get after it, and make sure you're always Hydrated.
