Take a look at the new Apple CarPlay. Apple is making a play to do all the car displays, not just infotainment. I don't own a Android, so I can't tell you what they're offering. Of course the big OEM's will fight it, auguring that their proprietary systems add value (which rarely get updated after you buy the car). I look forward to each iOS upgrade to see what it adds.

You are right, manufacturer’s like Bmw built mythic cars in last millenium and what about the spirit now? Hope BMW is not thinking about the autopilot like Tesla in the next H87 😬

My friend at the office had an i4 M50 loaner yesterday so i was able to take the car for a drive and try out the new screen.I have always disliked the screen but when you actually get in the drivers seat it looks quite good.Nice graphics and it really does wrap towards the driver for a nice view.I still wish it had a round gauge option and was better integrated into the dash but i could definitely purchase the G87 with that screen.
BTW that i4 M50 is seriously fast. The low speed kick down from the regenerative braking is very annoying though,It seems way more aggressive then the regenerative braking in my fathers old i3. |

It's honestly not so bad. If you're an "auto" kind of guy it's as easy as physical buttons. When the system is off, you click on the + or - that's permanently there at the bottom next to the temperature and you're all set. Only thing that can takes a few extra clicks is if you want to fine tune all your settings.

I think BMW hasn't lost its way. The car industry is ever changing and to compete, they must innovate, must experiment and leapfrog the old with boldness and vision.
As mentioned earlier in thread, the screens will grow on us "eventually", as they provide a more dynamic visual experience, software can more readily be updated over air to add features, refinements and fixes, but screens also provide a more personalized driving experience. My biggest gripe with BMW's current implementation is the way these screens just sit on the dash. They should float off dash IMO, enough to appear a more purposeful design element. The gap between the bottom of screen and dash becomes a crumb and dust catcher if screen simply sits on dash. I prefer they float proud rather than be cocooned into a binnacle that was originally designed for mechanical gauges. It would also be great if they were adjustable (tilt and raise) like a steering wheel to conform to a driver's viewing preference, of course within safety regulation standards. Like most enthusiasts, I too love mechanical gauges and physical buttons, the look and feel of a cockpit, but these elements are largely becoming part of a passing era, and we must adjust to an ever changing future of electrification and simplification. Screen interfaces are as much a result of a need for efficiency and usability as they are profitability; as our need to innovate and seek a better mouse trap. More pragmatically, they are needed to conform with a future of electrification and stringent safety regulations, and most importantly, our need for more; more information, more customization, more flexibility, etc. In the end, it's not so much the means in which we interact with a car that really matters, but rather how effective the mean chosen is and how it heightens the driving experience. I firmly believe one day we'll look back at these screens with fondness, in the same manner we now do our precious instrument gauges and physical buttons, with inflamed passions; that is until the next best thing. Never doubt the power of technology and innovation and our hunger for it. Remember the iPhone. Embrace the future with open arms…that's how we got the internal combustion engine, the manual, and a litany of countless inventions. By believing there was a better way.

i'll be honest i'd bet money that they did this because the global shortage of parts/chips makes all the transistors and such needed for physical buttons that much more complicated. you cut out your physical parts and put it all in a piece of glass, all the sudden your supply chain and production is more streamlined and also you don't mind charging more money because the screen is bigger, and ~curved~. the decision itself i'm sure had nothing to do with being forward-thinking, they just had an opportunity to simplify production and create a cheaper product that they could charge more money for which tbh is a brilliant way to blend in with inflation |

At least the graphics and user interface is mostly on point.

Mine is on Auto, but I do adjust temp occasionally. No biggie for me to go without climate buttons, however, my main gripe is I hate touching screen cause it leaves finger prints and I believe one can't adjust the temp on the main screen with the iDrive controller.

My main gripe with the screen isn't the screen itself, it is how it is implemented into the interior design. Porsche is the only manufacturer doing it properly. Just take one look at a Taycan and its million screens, they are all integrated into the dash. |

Not me, but we all use them with the car in motion, over bumpy roads, in traffic, on twisty roads, etc. Digging through menus on a touchscreen at arm's length in these situations is not only a major PITA, it's outright dangerous. Why is that so difficult for some to digest?
