M2 Performance Discussion

Adaptive M Suspension Review (from the Motor Trend review of the M2CS): "How much you loved the M2 Competition depended entirely on where you drove it, because rough roads made the stiffly sprung car skittery and unsettled. It was brilliant on smooth pavement and especially on a racetrack. With tons of grip and predictable handling, it's the kind of car that responds better the harder you whip it. Unless the corners got too tight, which meant you'd walk a tightrope between terminal midcorner understeer and wild corner-exit power oversteer. To understand what driving the 2020 BMW M2 CS is like, just forget everything negative about the M2 Competition. The 2020 BMW M2 CS is perfect everywhere: tight corners, long sweepers, smooth pavement, and rough roads. The adaptive dampers, along with lighter 19-inch wheels and stickier Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, fix every problem we ever had with the M2 and M2 Competition (which used same-size-but-heavier 19-inch wheels with thin-sidewall Pilot Super Sport tires). All the nervousness is gone, replaced with total confidence in the car. There's always grip, and almost always more than the car is capable of overwhelming." 6 Speed Manual Transmission: Hallelujah, BMW is giving us this option. I'd hope it's less rubbery and more direct than the one in the current M3/4 Competition. The one in the OG F87 (which I happen to own) was spectacular. But either the Rogue or Auto Solutions kit will likely fix the issue for the G87, unless BMW fixes it themselves. But let's CELEBRATE that BMW is giving us that option. ZF 8 Speed Automatic Transmission: Well know from several other BMW models. Surprisingly good from my experience. Not as sporty as the DSC, but a bit smoother. And able to handle whatever torque the powerful S58T engine can throw at it. My Conclusion: IF BMW can take the G87 a step beyond the M2CS, I will be overjoyed, and will gladly take my allocation (#3 at my dealer). Anyone else excited about this combination of performance elements?

A talk about performance can't overlook weight, especially an extra 150 or so kg.
A set of good coilovers fixed the F87's "skittery & unsettled" handling over rough roads and together with PS4S's there isn't midcorner understeer. Won't be so easy for a G87 owner to shed weight Having run a set of the G80 PS4S Star spec 275/35/19 fronts on the back of my M2 it would seem BMW's answer to the weight is a soft compound tyre that sadly gave half the tyre life (12-13K km) of a generic PS4S on my F87, put them on a heavier car on 'driving' roads I'd expect even worse wear. |

Good point.
However, a G87 with 6MT and CF roof should be just a few lbs. more than an F87 with DSC and a steel roof. Add a set of ultra lightweight wheels (763s or a set of Apex wheels), and should be about the same. We'll see when the final specs are released. |

No question the G87 will be faster accelerating with it's increased HP & with the softer Star spec rubber will deliver a quicker Ring lap time, we'll have to wait to see how it compares as a driver's car. End of the day physics rule, tyre wear was a main reason Apex dropped the G80 for their Ring taxi. Once guys start tracking the G87 it will be interesting to see how 200TW tyres hold up, going fast could be expensive |

It is not going to be hard to order and equip the G87 to save a few critical lbs.
Weight savings: Carbon Fiber Roof: "Weighing around 11 lbs. less than a standard steel roof and approximately 44 lbs. less than a steel roof incorporating a moonroof. And lowering the car's center of gravity by 2+ inches." 6MT versus auto transmission: "A 6MT represents an approximate 49 lb. weight savings over a DCT." I assume about the same for the ZF. It's also stating the obvious that the G87's weight increase will have detrimental affects on performance, to what extent we're not sure though the G80 Apex Ring Taxi had 50% front tyre life of their F80. That wouldn't be attractive to guys who track or regularly do mountain runs. |
