What does putting the transmission into “S” really do?
I don’t have my m240i yet but I was wondering what exactly does putting the transmission into “S” mode do? I assume it puts the transmission into manual mode where you shift with the paddles. So if you shift to “S” and don’t click the paddles, does the car still up shift/ downshift automatically or is it locked into manual mode and will hold its gear until you shift the paddles?

S mode will shift for you until you make a shift yourself. Then it will stay in manual mode from that point, until you shift back to D mode.
If you shift manually in D mode, it will fairly quickly return to shifting for you. |

That’s what confuses me since putting it in let’s say “Sport” or “Sport +” mode will alter the transmissions behavior, however putting the gear selector in “S” will also do so, isn’t this redundant?

Every BMW for a decade or more has had it. There’s a table on the forum somewhere that explains how the two modes interact. |

So putting the transmission in “S” will just firm up the shifts but not alter the shift points? So putting it in “S” in say comfort mode, the tranny will still maintain its shift points (shifting at low rpm’s) but the shifts will be faster/rougher?
Or perhaps putting the shifter in “S” which corresponds with S1 and S2 mode, is another shift logic (more aggressive) applied on top of the drive modes (comfort, sport, sport +)? Last edited by Coconut; 10-17-2022 at 04:56 AM.. |

The car has "sportier" modes for the engine AND the transmission.
The sportier the engine setting (Eco - Comfort - Sport - Sport Plus) the sportier the transmission gets. When you slide the shifter over to Sport mode it simply exaggerates everything previously mentioned. |

from what I've noticed from having the car in Sport+ mode, the regular "D" mode will shift around 3k RPM (if you're driving normally, depending on throttle input) and the "S" mode will shift around 3.5k RPM (with the same throttle input). however, the shift points will change depending on your throttle input. TBH, I only use manual mode if I want to be sporty, but "D" for the rest of the times. I also drive around in Sport+ all the time. call me crazy but I like it lol

What others have said. Can add with my 230i I have Sport Individual mode setup to be as close to normal mode as possible. All I really want is that damn auto stop/start feature disabled. Yeah, there is a button for just that but for some reason I prefer sport mode.
When I move the shift lever from D to S if the car is moving almost invariably a lower gear is selected. The RPMs of course go up. The transmission shifts on its own but shift points are at higher RPMs. Even at freeway speed -- 70mph -- S keeps the transmission in 7th gear rather than in D which has 8th gear selected. |

It's a drive-fast mode for dummies who can't decide what gear to be in themselves.
