One annoyance with NOT having the mild hybrid is that the auto engine off can get really lurchy when coming to a stop light that turns green as you're about to stop or when stopping for a traffic jam and it starts moving as you're about to stop.

I have read the some series 3 have that. And Im not referring to the real 330e with a rechargeable battery good for 20 miles of driving. Im asking about a 48 v system that some 3 series have with small electric motor to help the engine, or something like that...

It is correct. The M340i and M440i do have that system indeed. But not the M240i…

If anything it's possibly due to cost saving. |

I read somewhere it was both weight and space. Apparently bmw wanted to keep it dynamic as possible and they’ve already had to move the car battery into the boot due to bonnet space so I doubt there would be anywhere to put it

If you look on the passenger side engine corner (where car batteries normally are) you’ll see a huge basketball shaped empty space where the Lithium battery for the mild hybrid system would be. Glad it’s not there, less complicated and extra weight.

I have seen that huge empty space too, it made me wonder why in the world would BMW engineers design a confined volume to contain... nothing!
