There's a fine line of design to draw interest, while not going overboard. IMO the F87 was a touch too far under the line (from the side profile), and got the front and rear just about right. The G87 went over the line for the front and rear, while the side looks great to me.

I was initially thinking e39 to e60, but f80 to g80 was a bit more… shocking

I voted F80/2 to G80/2 because of
A. The F80 looked damn near perfect. It was muscular, purposeful, stylish, and aggressive.
The G80 unfortunately looks like it was designed by multiple people across the globe. It's just not cohesive.
B. The F80 was the right size.
The G80 is just big. The G82 is massive.
I can go on about every other aspect but since this is about the changes in design, I'll stop here. Again, this isn't about how it drives, because the G80/82 drive really really well.

I liked/loved them all.

My G82s have garnered tons of compliments from random folks. Frankly, it’s a very impressive looking car, regardless of whether one likes the design or not. It’s wide, aggressive, and bulky in a muscular way (a la GTR). Strong street presence for a car that be had for $80k. Anecdotally, it seems to be up there as one of the most well-received BMWs by the general public.

Conversely, I never heard anything from anyone about any of my M2 Comps. Out of all the F8x I owned, I only received unsolicited compliments on my AY M4 and SMB M3 CS.

Similar experience with my BG g80 despite a ton of crap from the f80 crowd last year. Wasn't even in a market for a car when I saw it on youtube. The performance and the bold styling change won me over. This car definitely has a presence. While driving it home from the dealship, a guy with his girl in a tastefully modded evo X cut through traffic to honk and give a thumbs up. Random drivers at stop lights, people crossing the street, cops at dui checkpoints, probably more thumbs up than all previous cars combined.

F80 to G80 easily
the worst looking M car ever.

The more I see them the more I hate them. Everything about it. Not just the grille but the horrible bodywork and silly side skirts and then it’s overall bloated appearance.

Back in the day, I would have said E39->E60 was the worst. And that was the common sentiment at the time. But the E60 design seems to have aged well and a lot of people who hated that car's looks at release have since warmed to it, me included. Maybe I'll even warm to the G80/82 & G87 someday.

Because almost nobody on the planet would choose that option. The E46 design was pretty much universally loved.

Well I guess that explains why so many of you on here hate the g87. I absolutely hate the E46, after a few e36's thought I wanted one (even though I thought it was hideous), but hated it even more after driving a few.

E46 M3 is the ugliest m vehicle in history.
