Uncomfortable in seat - any tips?

Hey guys, I’ve had my M240 for just over a year now. I still cannot figure out the most comfortable seating position. I currrently have it all the way down with the thigh raising all the way down as well and the back as upright as is comfortable to try and have good posture. I swear using the lumbar makes me more uncomfortable. I’m 6’0 and 240 so I’m definitely a bigger guy. Any tips on how you guys sit?

I am right there with you. While I have not had the vehicle as long as you, I have/still having issues with getting a proper fit so that when I exit I am not as stiff as a board (excuse the cliché).

I am still fine tuning the fit by only doing ONE change every few days. I was changing too many variables at the same time to know which one was the issue. Additionally, I watched several videos (the Jaguar Animated video was pretty informative) I am not at my computer to search for it at the moment. I will do so later.

I have had the car exactly 3 months. The first two were incredibly uncomfortable to the point of having to get some treatment. I figure my body was so accustomed to the Mini seats (have had only Mini Coopers since 2012) that it is taking some time to get my body to feel comfortable. I am thinking analogous to changing my road bike of 30 years to a new modern one. I was in a great deal of discomfort on the early rides. My bike fitter told me that I would be in some discomfort as my muscles and connective tissue readjust to a new position. Perhaps the same in this case. Although taking much longer.

I can't understate that age plays a factor. I am not young either, have knee and back issues from a life-time of sports, and these seats have more adjustment points than any other seat I have ever had.

I feel that time and making micro adjustments has really helped.

Best of luck as the car is super fun to drive!

Man I’m in the opposite camp. I am the most comfortable I have been in any car that I have owned. I like to sit very low and far back. Probably why I hate SUV seating positions. Maybe try to set the seat lower if possible? It took me a little while to get it right, utilizing memory pos 1 & 2 for a while to compare until I dialed it in.

For reference, I am 5’10” ~170lbs late 20s.

I have a lot of miles on a lot of different bikes, but I've never heard of a "bike fitter". What exactly is that?

As far as the comfort for these seats I find myself going out to the car to read the news simply because I love sitting in the car, and I'm more than happy to sit in the car while my wife goes shopping..."Take your time, babe."

I also find it very comfortable. I'm around 5'6" and 135 lbs. I have the side bolsters fully filled, seat set the lowest it can go, and the seat back positioned where I can sit back in the seat and easily drive with one hand on the steering wheel at 12 o'clock (not gangster looking driving/style), leg bolsters extended with 2 fingers of a gap/space.

I ride a road bike. My feet are clipped/connected to the pedals. Therefore, you must have the height of the seat, the handlebars, and other aspects of the bike adjusted so that your knees do not get trashed, save the back, and reduce fatigue in the upper body. I am usually out for 30-60 miles at a time depending on day, etc... A bike fitter uses either new high-tech machines to get your proper measurements (a bit expensive ~$400-$500) or do it old school by taking many measurements of your body to get the best fit.

The seats are absolutely comfortable. If it makes any sense, I felt as if my body fit in the Cooper seat better; however, the 240i is much more comfortable. I am at a point where I am doing very slight adjustments. Almost there.

As I said, now I find myself volunteering to drive!

It took me a little bit to get comfortable, and I'm still making minor adjustments depending on the drive. Biggest thing was adjusting the side bolsters. I like to sit pretty low in the car, seatback reclined, seat bottom reclined back slightly, leg extender out. I almost feel cocooned in once the seats are warmed up (been cold up here the last few days).

It's not the most comfortable car I've ever sat in, but it's the most comfortable car I've owned, so there's that!

Some bike shops offer this. Specially very good if one does long rides or endurance rides. I do 2-3 50km-100km weekly gravel rides. And 5-8 times a season 100km-200km gravel rides. Bike fitting optimizes your power and suggest best riding posture for one's bike. Bike fitting is popular in road bikes and gravel bikes.

I thought “bikes” meant motorcycles. Even doing Iron Butt rides and 5,000 mile rides in a week I’d never heard of a “bike fitter”, but it all makes sense now.

I find my M240i as comfortable as my old 428i with standard seats, and a lot more comfortable than my old 430i Gran Coupe w/ sport seats. It was an instantly good fit when taking delivery. Was very surprised. Of course, plenty of adjustments. I’m far back.. low.. seat bottom a little up.. lying down more than most.. no lumbar .. steering wheel all the way down and all the way forward. I’m about 6 feet and 285 lbs, and have a very broad back/shoulders. I recommend starting adjustment all the way down with wheel all the way down and out .. find leg distance, then find back angle.. then raise seat just enough and seat bottom a little until thighs get just enough support

By wheel all the way forward, do you mean pushed towards the engine bay?

It's a shame they gave up headroom for the fancier sunroof. I had plenty of headroom in the outgoing model, but I barely fit in the new one, even with the seat all the way down. I'm 6'2". I have the seat all the way down, the front of the seat all the way up to get thigh support, the seat back partially reclined, the headrest at max extension, and the steering wheel as far down as it will go. I find the position comfortable and I like the lumbar and bolstering, but there is very little clearance between my head and the roof.

I suspect they will add the Sport seats as an option next year. Has anyone sat in those to compare comfort & support?

Yes would be curious on this opinion as well.

It's a small car. I'm not sure if you're a large person if this car will ever be very comfortable. I did a 13 hour straight drive and was much more comfortable than in previous BMW cars I've owned. I also don't even have the lumbar add-on for my seats and it didn't matter.

That's the worst. I actually find these seats more comfy and I have less back pain than my last two cars which were both 8 series. I wish we could have merino leather in our cars.. I do miss that alot. The seats in the 2 are very supportive if you can get the lumbar adjustment.

I have the Sensatec and I am a big dude, 6' 2" 280lb and I can get quite comfortable in this car. Seat all the way down, about 90% back, and with it laid back some. Headrest all the way down too...no complaints at all.
