You can test the ethanol levels with a kit (i.e. REV X), so he might have a better estimated guess of what his actual blend is.

As for the reasoning; he has a JB4, so he's probably running map 4 or 5 and trying to get the most out of it.

As M240SLC stated, I use the E30 (or even E22, doesn't really matter) as a safety blanket for the JB4 on Map 4. Not likely getting any performance from the extra E as the JB4 doesn't know it's there.

As far as the E content, I'm just making a guess based on my STi days when I had a flex fuel tune and could monitor E content in real time. My calculation is based on E10 in the 93, and E75 in the E85. Being in TX we don't get the winter E reduction that's as drastic up north.

It’s a moving target based on amount of gas already in tank and whether the current content already includes E30.

My current strategy is 4.6 gallons of E85 and 9.1 gallons of super when starting from scratch and near empty. This would also be approximately 5.7 gallons of E85 and 1.1 gallons of super when starting from scratch and with a half empty tank.

However, once you have E30 in the tank then a half empty tank would be 2.3 gallons of E85 and 4.5 gallons of super to maintain the E30.

I’m using E70 as actual E content at the pump (and E10 already included in the super) as I’ve never come across any E in the 80’s, and it tends to go even lower in the winter. The government considers anything from E51 to E83 as E85.

Use the Fuel-It Ethanol mobile app. We have a 13.7 gallon tank and select 10% in the Settings for Gas Ethanol Percentage.

Where would you probably get your E85 from? I know Speedway is in the ATL, and I used their E85 back up by Chicago, which was decent. How about RaceTrac? I might be relocating to FL, and it seems like they'll be my closest source for E85.

91 is a rarer sight in SW Ohio here, it's mostly 87/89/93. I've found UDF doesn't charge out the ass for 93 like other stations.

Few race tracks a couple chevrons and bps in the area have it. Not to sure if one is better than the next just always see it and want to put it in my car haha.

Costco 91 on their credit card (cheapest in the area by far plus 4% annual kickback). Shell 93 on their fuel rewards credit card (10 cents/gallon off) if no Costco nearby but typically the most expensive in the area. I don't notice any difference between them performance-wise. We also have BJs (Costco competitor) gas in the area and their premium is 93 but not top tier.

I don't own an M240i, but it might be because the BMW owner's manual recommends Shell.

Does that mean that theoretically if i am taking a trip up to the mountains I would be better off one grade lower of octane? Its been so long since I've filled up with anything but premium I dont even know what that would be... 87?

No, not better off, just not necessary to have 93 in the mountains like we do at 600'. Always go with the highest octane you can source, especially since you have forced induction.
