blew run flat tire
Unfortunately yesterday had my first mishap. Hit a pothole that grew insanly big from the last storm and instantly blew out my run flat. Had the car in sport plus which obviously didn’t help and was such a hard hit it even bent the wheel slightly. Was able to limp it home about 5 miles but now screwed with a bent wheel and no spare. Be careful with these tiny side Walls.

Ouch... one of the many reasons I hate winter in Colorado.
The main exit to my apartment complex gets horrible after every snow storm and the city just throws in some patchwork asphalt every time. When I get my 240 I'm going to take the long way through the back exit and down the road to avoid it. |

Looks like mostly cosmetic damage to wheel.
Hopefully a quality wheel repair shop can repair the bend and do some magic with some filler and a spot refinish..... Or you can use this incident as an opportunity to buy some nice A/M wheels with dedicated summer tires and use the run flats and OEM wheels as your winter set-up. |

My experience with run flat tires on my prior BMWs is that they're borderline worthless. They can help if you pick up a nail or something, but the sidewalls are so stiff that they blow if you hit any kind of pothole. And you're not supposed to drive on them with sidewall damage (since that's all that's holding you up). The Pirellis are particularly bad, although I had problems with Bridgestone Potenzas too.
I've been so much happier since I binned them and switched to non-RFT summer/winter tires. |

Ohh. thats a real bummer...curious, what speed were you doing at the time?
Jpcoop, I had no idea the stiffer sidewalls of the runflats make em more prone to blowouts but i guess that has been your experience. I have been avoiding runflats due to the harsher ride, and the fact that in over 50 years of driving I've only had one flat on the road (with my car......weirdly though I've had 2 flats on the road with my motorcycle with far fewer total miles driven/rode....and ya don't carry spare tires on a bike). |

Those of us who have chosen to stay with the run flats have all felt your pain. I blew 2 tires on the 2015 M235 that I had. Both at highway speed on the interstate, hitting pot holes at night. Talk about a jarring impact, like I had just run over a curb at 70 mph. Left front both times, somehow the left rear escaped damage, probably because it felt like the car jumped a foot to the right after the impact. LOL I have to say they do as advertised, the second time I probably drove close to 15 miles to get to the next rest stop, limping along with my hazards on doing about 30mph
Funnily enough, I finally ditched the run flats for a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4's all season just last August after 8 years and 70k miles of ownership only to just trade the car a few weeks ago, bent wheels and all for my new 2023 M240.....with Pirelli Cintaurato P7 run flat tires.....

That was a great way of explaining it. felt like hitting a curb at 50 mph and It was so loud I honestly thought the tire was gonna be blown to shreds. These potholes in Colorado are brutal and makes me not wanna drive around in many areas. Update just ordered a spare wheel from bmw. $800 with shipping and $1000 on a set of pilot sport all season. This pothole costed me $1800. Wow makes me want a car I can actually afford😂

I was following a bunch of cars and honestly driving no faster than 40 mph. Sounds crazy but that pothole swallows the whole entire wheel. Need to go take pictures of it but I bet it’s atleast 10 inches long and 5-6 inches deep. Not friendly for are cars.

you might want to try an insurance claim to recoop some of those costs. Most insurance will cover that under comp or collision. It will depend upon your deductible as to whether it is worth it.
