Phone charger deleted? Here's an aftermarket fix.
I have a 2022 M240ix that was delivered in December 2021. As many of you know, at that time BMW deleting items from the cars due to supply chain issues (e.g., a built-in Sirius XM radio, passenger side lumbar support). Included in the deltes at that time was the wireless charging capability of the phone tray.
Well, I found an aftermarket solution: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/32568...andl_shipto=US This insert slides over the built-in tray and gets power from the 12V socket in front of the try. It fits in very nicely and my iPhone 12 with a thin Apple case fits in perfectly. I thought I'd share this for others who also had the charger deleted and are looking for a wireless solution.

That's a pretty cool and clean solution. $60 is I guess fair considering what BMW wanted for the option, and with it being crap. I like that it hides the 12v lighter plug that I'd never use anyway
How does it work? |

Well, the iPhone warms up but I don't think it reaches an unusual temperature. I keep the compartment lid open while charging to get air flow.

It is a plate with a charging surface at one end and a 12V plug at one end. It slips into the space above the built-in charging plate then you push it down. The new plate rests on top of the original plate, raising the charging surface by less than half an inch. It is a snug press fit and the 12V plug slips into the socket. There are cut outs to make sure that there's no interference with the two cup holders. Once installed, it's actually difficult to notice that it's even there.

I have one of these (not sure it's the exact same model, since the power button sits between the 2 cupholders), and it works perfectly. Phone gets a little warm but that's pretty standard for wireless chargers, in my experience. Not sure on the rate but it seems to charge things decently quick. Took like a month to get from China, but for $60... hard to beat.

I can tell you that I think it works fine. The charging rate is comparable to the built-in charger I had in my 2018 M550ix. The iPhone warms up, but I find that true with other chargers charging at a similar rate.

I brought this up in a diff thread, but why am I the only one who’s phone gets hot in this thing? I don’t understand. I’ve tried placing it in various positions. I have a thin cover on my phone. Maybe it’s because it’s placed on top of the built in wireless charger (which got my phone hot too)? I pulled the fuse for the cigarette lighter jack, so it’s not working right now but once I get around to fixing it I’ll experiment some more. The fitment/look of the thing is awesome. Looks OEM.

Yes, it does. In fact, the fit is so good it looks original. As the photo I posted originally suggests, it looks like original equipment.

My 2022 M240ix has the factory charger, but it doesn't do much charging, more like it just keeps the battery from dropping any further.
I put my phone in with 24% charge, drove 30 minutes home, charge was 25% when I got out of the car, looked at the phone 2 minutes later and it was back to 24%. |
