yeah, this is not really a fair comparison due to the fact that on one side you have the lowest trim of one manufacturer and the highest trim of the other. If this is the only two options then yeah, you should go with the M2.

I would also agree. IMO go with six bangers otherwise your just paying for the name. I have driven both 4 and 6 cyl, for me its six cylinder any day.

Im 20 so im hoping around 21ish ill have the car. Im thinking about ordering late this year depending what way the economy swings. Im still weighing pros and cons. I didn't like how the F8X Ms drove. would these be any similar.

Hey all, both cars are great. It’s all based on opinion and how you feel about something isn’t subject to a fact/fiction.
It’s a win-win here. If you have to money to buy something that’s not a necessity, then you’re doing well (especially in this economy) just my 2 cents |

Very good and factual info on the Porsche. Not only the wait time, as mentioned, but many locales will be higher than MSRP, but they may require you take more options than you wanted/planned (because the shortage of availability, some are basically making buyers option them out). Oh yeah, you want a personal color, you will have to wait till next year for that. |

I didn't love the 4-cyl enough to buy it, but given the way most people feel about it, if I were you I would strongly consider it. I could be perfectly happy with one. Maybe even consider a used or CPO Cayman S/GTS with the 2.5 engine. Because of the hatred, these cars are under-appreciated and under-valued. Like the 928, which was a great car. All IMHO and YMMV, of course. |

But the attitude changed after I bought my Boxster. (At more than $4000 off of sticker...) My Porsche experience on the whole was good. Put 317K miles on my Boxster, and 150K miles on my Porsche 996 Turbo. Just for me I got Porsche out of my system. While the Boxster and Cayman S were superb cars with handling one could only imagine the best *road* car was my Turbo. Why? Because with rear seats I could when I got tired stop and recline my seat and stretch out and catch 40 winks. With the Boxster and Cayman with no rear seats just the engine compartment bulkhead behind the seats this was not possible. The 718 and M2 are quite different cars. Both fine cars but both with limitations/trade offs. I didn't shop Boxster vs. some front engine car (I had a 2001 Z28 at the time) but I shopped mid-engine cars. Ferrari was out. There was the Pontiac Fiero ("old") or the Toyota MR2. But the MR2 had zero room for luggage. The Boxster had a large front trunk and a good sized rear trunk. While it was considerably more money that the MR2 I bought the Boxster and never looked back. |

I was in a similar situation, although in my case the choice was easier
![]() . The car I wanted was the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 but at home they told me no, that it had to be a car where we could all fit, so I went for the BMW M2 G87.The Porsche is much more fun but the BMW is much more practical, that's where the final decision lies: If the car is only going to be used by you, the Porsche, if you have to take family or more people, the BMW. If you finally choose the Porsche, please have an atmospheric engine. |

It all depends on what is meant by "usable" and "daily". If you're young and single, and don't haul a lot of stuff, maybe the Cayman and Supra fit those descriptions.

This reminds me of when I asked for a Porsche 718 Cayman S quote and got one for €80,100 and they decided to round it down to €80,000 as if that was a massive favour. I was so offended, I didn't even reply. That was for a pretty basic Cayman S. I ended up ordering a fully-loaded M2 G87 for €6,000 less... |

This is a good comparison at face value (and if pricing is not too much of a concern lol). I have been debating between the new M2 or a 718 4.0. But both are so great in their respective use cases. We try and plug one specialized vehicle into 10+ scenarios, we're bound to be disappointed.
As for me, I will need to drive the new M2 and see...

The only two 718s to consider IMO, having own two of them is the base 718 and the GTS4.0/GT4. However, if you're looking at a loaded up 718, save yourself some money and get the M2. The base 718 makes way more sense as a stripped model to keep it light and fun. Once you start adding options, you get very close to GTS4.0 money which is a far more capable car. If you're looking at a GTS4.0/GT4 or an M2.....get the GTS4.0/GT4....if you can get one.

OP: Hammer v. Scalpel. Very different vibes. Drive both and you'll have no trouble making the decision.

This is why the now-dead Cayman T was perfect. You would buy it as-standard (since it comes with some nice stuff unlike the true base) with almost no other options for ~$70k and enjoy. If you want a flat 6, and I wouldn't blame you (I made the same call), I'd take the 981 GTS over the 718 equivalent. Sells for M2 money. Flash the 991 GT3 steering program into the 981 GTS and you a have a more visceral, much better sounding, and moderately slower (but still very quick) car for a rather ridiculous $35-40k discount.
