Is this a genuine dash cam and works when the car is parked up? Or is t like the one in my A35 where you just record your journey ?

It is only active while the ignition is on or the vehicle is running, as far as I know it is not active while the car is off and parked.

It only records like 40 seconds at a time but does not save it unless you do a manual record. during an incident it will then save 20 before during and after the event for you records.

If you want decent Dashcam protection you will need to invest in one. I removed my Iroad 4K unit from the stinger and will have it refitted to the BMW on Friday

20 seconds before hitting record does not go back far enough since it's cumbersome to activate. The connected app alone allows you to activate the 360 cams and get a still of the surroundings.

Is there not a button near the gear selector? That’s how you activate in other models.

ID8 increases the record time to 30 seconds before and after as well

it is activated automatically when it senses a collision, or you can push the camera button near the gear selector and it will save the last 20 seconds and the next 20 seconds. I believe it can only save 10 clips total, so you will have to delete footage if you use it a lot.

I am intending to buy the BMW Eye Cam 3 (?) once it gets released in the States since it has radar detection for movement when the car is off.

There is a remote 3D camera feature where you can manually record a clip from your phone when the car is parked. I used it for example to see if I left my garage door open. I don't think its on the level of Tesla sentry mode though.

Just push and hold the camera button for 3 seconds, and it will start recording. (20sec before, and after).
You don’t have to go trough the entire menu…. It was a good tip I got some time ago.

I've pre ordered the cam so it can be fitted to the car when it arrives

Don't most modern Dashcam brands have this? My Iroad x10 has motion sensing in park mode. Mines 2 years old now I swapped it out of the stinger. Does a great job in the car park with full app control via Wifi.

Now if the Eye cam 3 was integrated into MyBMW app that's a different story

Coming from a Camaro SS 1LE with a built-in drive recorder I can say the BMW drive recorder is a joke!

After playing with it the first time I was like, "Ok, this is sorta cool for recording 40 second video clips; now where's the actual drive recorder?"

I actually spent time going through the menu trying to find what I thought was the actual drive recorder, thinking the whole time there's no way what I just played with is actually it.
