G87 vs. Supra
There's been a little talk about this and a video has been posted, but I'm hoping to get some feedback from people who have driven both the G87 and Supra 3.0.
I've had a few M cars but got a Supra last year after driving a G82 and deciding it felt too big and heavy for my taste. I bought the Supra as a stopgap/bridge to the G87 and I must say, it's exceeded my expectations. I'm currently 2nd in line for an allocation at my dealership and just curious to get some feedback. Reviews I've read/watched (a ton of them like everyone else on here) seem to indicate the shorter wheelbase makes the G87 feel more lively and nimble than the G82, but 3800 pounds is still 3800 pounds and obviously a 400 pound penalty vs. the Supra. I'm also slightly concerned about the lack of low RPM torque with the S58 vs. B58 for around town driving. Anyway, appreciate the input from anyone who has driven both. Thanks! PS, oh and here's a pic of the Supra because we all love pics on here of course. |

Unless you want something the Supra doesn't have, I don't see why you'd consider the G87. The Supra is lighter, prettier (IMO), and cheaper.
* The S58 motor is biased towards high revs, but also has more base HP, so you won't LOSE anything vs. the Supra at the low end. Roughly the same 0-60 times. This issue is way overblown IMO, and total non issue if you are using the 8AT. * The G87 is more practical, roomy, and comfortable. * The Supra has a better shift experience if you are going 6MT. * If you are willing to mod and tune, the G87 has more potential than the Supra. It should be easy to add more power, trim weight, etc., than the Supra. * G87 has iDrive8 and the latest M-only perf goodies like M adaptive suspension, 10 stage traction control, etc. Handling: When it comes to handling, the G87 (like its M CLAR siblings) is more planted, precise, flat in corners, and predictable. Less playful. The G87's shorter wheelbase and suspension do make it more tossable than the M4, but it's not a GR86 or anything. If you want that playfulness, G87 is not a good fit. Tracking: The G87 (stock) will probably beat the Supra, although if you are tracking it a lot you'll be burning through brakes and tires faster due to the weight. I expect, but cannot guarantee, that heavily modded G87s will be monster track cars once they bring the weight down below 3300 or so. So the G87 is a better car on various practical and technical merits, but unless you WANT those things, stay with the Supra. Edit: Also, great pic, it's a beauty. |

I really like the supra with the 6-speed. But the price is just too close to the BMW. There is lots of last-gen stuff in the supra that devalues it somewhat. And the advantages inherent in the supra (smaller, lower, lighter) are not cost-based, but rather a by-product of the design. The M2, if it is said to have disadvantages, are also inherent in the sedan-like size, which also bring its advantages.
The second biggest issue with the supra is dealing with Toyota dealerships. I could not find one that 1) treated me with any courtesy whatsoever, and 2) all required a ADM that brought it to the full MSRP of the M2, which then sort-of turned off my desire for the Supra. Outside that, I would have been happy with one... |
