So I curbed my tire today. 😭Unfortunately the sidewall got sliced a bit so I took it to a tire shop. When I got there a good cop/ bad cop scenario ensued.

One of the mechanics swore it could easily be fixed since it was “shallow”, didn’t reach the treads/fly, no air leak, no bulge on the sidewall and runflats are “tough”.

The other mechanic said that it was definitely dangerous and should be replaced immediately. No repair can fix it.

So i was inclined to agree with the second guy and ordered the tire, but since they didn’t have any on hand i would have to wait for it to arrive (No downpayment, i could also not get it if i decided not to). The second guy then said well, since I don’t have a spare that he would just fix it in the meantime and didn’t even want to charge me. He said I should see that he’s right and my tire is still safe to use. (I did “tip” him though).

Who was right? Should i get the new tire or not? I just got my car last month. Pics pre and post “fix”:

I’d say the decision is yours & yours alone! If any of us say, “hey, it’ll be fine” and then you have a blow out at speed, we’d feel pretty stupid!

Granted all decisions are mine in the end, I was just hoping someone who is more knowledgeable on the subject or has experience with something like this would share their opinion. Thanks.

First guy is right.
No different from a block of the main tread pattern coming off. If it’s not down to the structure of tyre you will be fine.

While there is no visible damage to the structure, it is very likely that sidewall structure is compromised from a hit that hard, sure ya can't see it since there is rubber covering it...but...your call, so ya feel lucky?
Personal choice, me would change it for peace of mind at least.

I think you should 100% change it. Logically now you have a point that is compromised relative to the rest of the tire. If you hit a pothole, it'll blow out the sidewall there instead of just making a bulge potentially. not worth the risk.

Another vote for a new tire. Money saved is not worth the possible risk of a sidewall blowout.

Ok, my pennies worth is that 100% I would change the tyre, if that fails at speed it could well result in a blowout!

I'd replace it personally, saving a few hundred bucks is not worth the nightmare if the tire goes at high speed.
