Has anyone successfully set up their smart phone as a digital key?

I followed the prompts on the BMW App right up to the point it tells me to place the phone near the "reader".

Where the heck is the "Reader"?

I tried placing the phone into the charge slot in the armrest with no success.

What might I be doing wrong?

I confirm that the phone has both Bluetooth and Internet active.

Any guidance for this old dinosaur would be greatly appreciated.
