Fixing misaligned OEM ZTK Fender Flares

If your G42 has the $2400 "Cooling and High Performance Tire Package" (ZTK option code) you'll get body color matched fender flares since the wider 19x8.5 front and 19x9.5 rear wheels with 245/255 tires will protrude past the factory fenders.

Unfortunately one of my fender flares came misaligned from the factory. They're only stuck on by 3M double-sided tape with no adhesive promoter. I used a clothing steamer to soften up the tape then I was able to pry it off with my hands without much issue. I used a little bit of 3M adhesive remover for the lit bits of leftover residue. You need to use 0.8mm (0.032") thick 3M VHB RP32 double-side tape. It's very important to use that thickness since it is the same as the factory. If you use anything thicker there will be a gap.

Unfortunately no, I forgot to take it. They misaligned it from the factory which cause one corner to protrude out about 2mm.

Thats pretty annoying, looks good now though. Your C7 looks to be the same spec as mine, white red interior mine was just a z51 stingray though same year. Hoping the BMW crowd is a tad younger than the corvette clubs around me, was like hanging out with my grand parents lol.

This guy has the same misalignment at the exact same spot. See picture #2 in his post.

Garage List
2022 BMW 230i  [0.00]
This stuff is No Bueno, man. I left Ford over this silly, easy to fix stuff. How did that possibly get past QC at the factory. The only other explanation is getting bumped/damaged in transit.

At least it is fixable (but should have to be!!) moreover, what else ain't right?

Bloody hell!

Well, quite a few minor things weren’t quite perfect with my ordered m240i. Here is the list:

1. Misaligned ZTK fender flare, protrudes ~2mm. Fixed myself with new application of 3M VHB.

2. Fuel filler cover not sitting quite flush on the bottom edge, protrudes about 2mm. Can’t be fixed. The plastic cover is preshaped like this at the factory.

3. Squeak around driver side left interior vent. I’ve taken of the plastic panel and applied tesa tape, didn’t stop it. I’ll look into removing more surrounding panels and see if I can fix it.

4. Passenger seatbelt mechanism rattle. I’ll need to find time to remove the B-pillar trim find out what’s causing this.

5. Exterior b-pillar rubber molding strip is wearing through where the window rubs against it on both driver and passenger side. When you open the door, the window pops down a bit to provide enough clearance to open the door. Thing is, it doesn’t pop straight down, it goes backwards a bit and that little motion rubs the rubber every single time which is wearing through the top textured coating and down to the smooth rubber.

6. Minor software issues in ID8. In one month of owning the car, the HUD stopped working, had to restart the car and it came back on. Two times now the startup animation was pixelated.

OP - thanks for sharing, nice work cleaning that up.

Was it just your rear trim pieces that were off?

Both rear sets on mine are misaligned. I think I could have done a better job than whoever was tasked with this at the factory.

I just picked it up last weekend and hadn't noticed until yesterday. Was too excited...

I am checking to see what the dealership suggests. I don't really want to get into mucking around with it myself.

It was the rear passenger side (bumper portion) that was sticking out.

The fender flares don't have any keyed areas or markers to reference off it. They just line it up as best they could following the bottom arch so for sure there will be variance depending on which technician installs it.

I wouldnt expect the dealer to install it with great care either. It's not their car and they just want to push cars through service as fast as possible, which is unfortunate but understandable. The best way to ensure good fitment is if you do it yourself, however youll be out of pocket the cost of the tape and you have to do it yourself.

The car has about 90 KMs on it. So I will got see them about getting a proper body shop to address it. If they plan to have their "techs" try to fix it, I will follow your lead and DIY.

It's the left rear bumper piece top corner that is lifting. And the right rear fender piece that is lifting as well. It almost seems like the tape isn't strong enough in those corners. I think the alignment is good enough, otherwise.

The front pieces are fine because they actually overlap the inner edge of the fender. So I can see that those would have been easier to install accurately.

They don’t clip together, they are used more as guides for the bottom fender flare to line up with the top. It’s actually a dumb design because you can see the clips are attached to the upper fender flare which is stuck onto the rear fender. If for some reason you damage your rear bumper and need to take it off, you actually have to remove the bottom AND top fender flares to allow the bumper to be removed. If a body shop doesn’t know about these clips, they’ll just keep yanking at the bumper and eventually brake the clips and probably mess up the top fender flare.
