Original intake - modified?
Hi
Is it possible to modo\ify the original intake to make it less restrictive? Is there some channels/restrictors that may be cut out to make the engine breath easier? Or is there no point in doing this? |

I’ve seen intake “upgrade” parts such as intake pipe hose, turbo inlet pipe, and intake muffler delete. And of course, higher flowing drop-in air filters. No idea if all of this would result on more turbo noises. I’m guessing that there likely wouldn’t be much (if any) noticeable performance gains.
For me I think it makes more sense to get a full like intake that can be sealed like BMS / Dinan. |

The gains from modding the stock intake are nominal, at best. I went through several options on the F80 platform, and ultimately the best combination of added sound/performance was a Burger Motorsport intake, with just the open filter and pipe under the hood. Sure, I'm sure a sealed system would result in more cold air, but I enjoyed the added turbo and induction sound gained. Just my 2 cents.

Depending in the country you live in, there’s good chance the intake has a charcoal filter sitting in front of the air filter. This can be easily removed to increase air flow (in theory). It’s not there to improve filtering of air going into the engine but apparently only serves to filter any emission gasses that could come backwards into the environment (not sure how but I’m guessing when the car is turned off maybe?)

Stock airbox system is very good, you'll need to go to something comprehensive that enlarges the turbo inlets to see a performance gain. You want to keep a sealed system, anything opening up to engine bay air may increase sound but will suck in hot air.
The low hanging fruit is a high flow panel filter, and removing the charcoal filter f you have one. |
