Member Introduction - M2 on order, coming from Alfa

Hey all, couldn't find a good fit for member intros so mods feel free to move around.

Driven many BMWs over the last 26 years but never really owned one. Came close a couple of times but perhaps that can be another post with a bit more context.

Ordered in early September with an October allocation, just moved on 9/21 to 112 (Scheduled for production), so pretty excited about that.

Currently own two MY18 Alfa Romeos, a Stelvio QV and a Giulia Ti, love both cars and wish I had room to keep all of them so more than likely, the Giulia will need to depart

Feel free to ask anything about Alfa, been a long time member on their forums and have seen/read a lot over the years. Personally, both cars have been trouble free and a delight to drive. Some dealers just don't have the right talent working on Alfas and that's where most of the issues get noisy. Of course, with all manufacturers, there's always a few minor issues.

Anyway, looking forward to contributing here, below is my build

Congrats super exciting! Same spec as me 6mt bsm with cognac! Little bit worried about the actual color of cognac but I wanted little bit of contrast haha. Hope your car arrives safe and fast!

If your build hasn’t started, may want to consider removing wireless charging since you are going with a manual.

Thank you! I was always a fan of the Black/Tan contrast, I really hope it works out as you mentioned In my brain, Black on Tan is classic BMW.

Thanks for the advice, what's your take on it? Simply pointless because of function or placement is sub par?

I personally do not have it, but I believe its located inside the center console and it can get extremely hot. I thought about getting it because of the digital key function but that unfortunately is not an option for manuals

Same boat. Don’t have it because BMW wireless chargers are notorious for overheating, causing the phone to disconnect from CarPlay. Maybe you could justify with digital key on the auto, but without that on manual, it just takes up space in the armrest with very minimal utility.

I picked up an M2 I didn't spec and released my allocation as it was taking forever, from the same dealership. It wasn't my spec but I had removed the charger as I heard the same thing (in Manual). I can 100% CONFIRM, the charger in manual is rough. I drove 400 miles after pick up to get it home and had to break the physical charger out of my bag because the car charger wasn't keeping up with waze/streaming radio.

Waste of $200 but at least I have an M2!

Fortunately it doesn’t really matter and is relatively low cost. I wouldn’t worry about it, and you’ll forget about it the moment you put your foot on the gas.

Hi there. Nice to make your acquaintance. I’d love to hear more about your experiences with Alfa. I have had many BMWs in the past including an E46 M3 which I loved. But now I’m currently torn between ordering a G87 M2 or the facelifted Gulia QV. Personally I prefer the design and looks of the Gulia but of course since looking through the forums, I’ve been drastically put off from the Gulia due to potential reliability issues.

I think the G87 is advantageous as it is a newer platform and more likely to be supported in the future whereas the Gulia QV is probably going to become obsolete in a couple of years. I think the design of the G87 doesn’t appeal initially as much as the Quad.

What are your thoughts? And why did you pick the G87 instead of upgrading your Gulia Ti to a Quad? And how’s the Stelvio QV? Do you enjoy driving it?

Appreciate the warm welcome! Most reliability issues on the QV platforms were in 2017 builds and specifically pre-05/2017 build dates (limp mode). There were battery issues across all Giulias/Stelvios the first two years but somehow I lucked out? As I mentioned in the OP, as long as you have a reliable/trusted dealer near you, there isn't reliability issues. Of course there are one off's, handful of turbo failures, but nothing out of the ordinary. First few maintenance cycles are cheap enough but the 30k calls for a pricey aux belt replacement (2.5k?). Alfa has changed it's "tune" and now mentions "as needed". Other than this, keeping up with oil changes, and most do every 6mo or 5-6k miles, you'll be totally fine.

If you're a passionate driver, I recommend to everyone to give Alfa QV a try. There hasn't been any other car that has appealed to me in such a way where you're truly connected to the car, and I've compared to recent M3's/M2's. The practicality of the Giulia platform (4dr/all year round) appeals to many. The Stelvio QV is honestly the best of both worlds, utility and a true sports car. It doesn't feel like a SUV by any means, nor does it drive like one. You'll be pleasantly surprised. For example, the Stelvio QV is our toddler (2) vehicle for what it's worth and it's our primary car.

The "giorgio" platform is going obsolete and from what I'm reading this week, they're extending into 2030 vs 2025, at least in the EU for now. A lot of dates are dictated by emission requirements. Regardless, looking at Alfa as a whole in the US, they're not going anywhere anytime soon if that's your worry. The V6 platform is solid and with a few mods you'll be in 700whp if that's your fancy.

Now as to why moving away from the Giulia... This has been the longest car I've kept, believe it or not, I'm usually on 2yr cycles but I've truly enjoyed the Giulia! It's tastefully moded for a bit more performance and I've babied it since Day 1. Simply put, time for a change and feel free to judge, I've been waiting for a MT + Sunroof I like for a long time Test drove the M3 as of recent and it's too much car for me and not as nimble as Alfa's. Test drove the M2 and that hit a note! Nimble, plenty of performance under the hood, manual, and sunroof! SOLD! Don't get me wrong, the M2 is not perfect but it brings enough to the table to make me more than curious!

P.S My short-list was 2024 Giulia QV or the M2 I know that I will own a future Alfa QV, just not sure how soon

Welcome to the forum.

I got my G87 in August.

The 6MT is what is going to make a difference versus an Alfa.

I'd say 3 things:
  1. Pre-order the Mishimoto skid plate and RGS intake guards.https://www.radiatorgrillstore.com/b...BoCKgsQAvD_BwE , https://www.mishimoto.com/bmw-g80-m3...hoCj2gQAvD_BwE . Lots of posts about damage to the exposed oil cooler and radiators. These are easy fixes!
  2. Get your dealer to do MP HAS as soon as it arrives. That way it comes with a full warranty (BMW is denying some unrelated front end/brake claims for those who went with an aftermarket HAS). You'll definitely want to do this, as it improves handling a bit and definitely looks 2000% better. From the factory, the car looks like it's on stilts. Add 12/12 mm spacers if you want.
  3. Replace the heavy cast wheels (32 lbs each) with BMW forged 825 or 826 wheels (23/24 lbs each), or lighter Apex, etc. wheels. I've got 825s I found here in the G80 member classified section. Having them powdercoated now.
  4. You might pre-order an Antigravity Lithium Battery. This will save 38 lbs! https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/h6-...xoCCocQAvD_BwE

Other than that, it's pretty amazing!

There are many other mids each of us can suggest. Know what, if anything, you want to do, will help with everyone's assistance/input/2 pennies.

If you want the M Performance Suspension aka Sport Suspension aka M Performance HAS, I would recommend going to your CA NOW and have them add it to be port installed (will be cheaper than having dealership install after delivery, will be on the car when you take delivery, alignment done by BMW at the port, and it will be a stock/OEM item and reflected as such on your Maroney sticker aka window sticker).

If this is something you want, and as you are at 112, it can still be added easily. The code is Z58. If you try and have it added and they cant ir dont know what to do, tell them to contact the inventory manager at BMW NA to have it added.

Thank you so much for the response and your input on your experience with the Alfa QV brand. It really reassures me that I should definitely think about it as a serious option now. I do have a dealer close by but not sure how competent they are, although if I do go for one, I’ll be taking out an extended warranty for sure.

I’ve also read about the extension into 2030 for the V6 and hopefully the rumours are true and they’ll continue to support and possibly even develop the Gulia QV with the V6 for a few more years yet instead of going full electrification of the QV in 2025 as they had originally planned.

I would skip HUD, wireless charging (apparently useless on 6MTs) and some carbon bits to get the M Carbon roof instead.

Thanks for these!

1 and 2 already done. The Mishimoto skid plate I got in today, just too heavy for my liking but it will do. I wish it as hard plastic instead.

3 I'm getting the 1000Ms for summer time, still trying to figure out my 19" square winter shoes

4 Not really tracking my car so I will probably pass on this one.
