Mirror with a garage door opener
As the option isn't available in the g87, has someone tried retrofitting this? Is it complicated?

Realized I didn't have it in my build when I picked up the car. Asked my BMW Rep and he told me it's not available for the M2 in Germany. So weird its standard in the US.

In Canada it is not standard, but is selectable as an option:

With the electrochromic feature as well as the garage door opener, it should be this mirror: https://www.schmiedmann.com/en/cata-ol?q=51169476752#

One thing to be aware of when replacing the mirror, though, is that things such as auto high-beam and driver assistance features on a specific car can change the specific mirror required for compatibility of all the features.

After a lot of research, seems there are major compatibility issues between different garage doors and homelink... So even if the mirror itself can be retrofitted it won't work with my garage door because of some rolling code encryption BS
I assumed a remote is a remote and it works with every system... Nope. |

I won't say "I haven't had any problems", but was able to get my homelink mirrors (on prior car and the new BMW) to work with one of the latest "rolling code" garage door openers.
You need to be very careful and methodical in following the instructions on both your garage door opener and the mirror setup in the owner's manual. Everything has to be in the proper mode and you need the proper "feedback" (mostly blinking lights) from opener and mirror. One thing that was not clear from the instructions in the owners manual was that the car itself needs to be in the correct "on not started" state for all of the mirror stuff to work as expected. I have an older truck that has a homelink system that will NOT work with the newer openers. So, they do eventually become obsolete. They do make repeaters that will talk to the new opener on one side and the old homelink on the other. Last edited by Smilodon; 11-27-2023 at 09:12 AM.. |

As an alternative, you can get a wifi controlled switch and pair it to your Amazon Alexa account. I have that on one of my garage doors so when I am driving up to the house I say, "Alexa, activate blah blah blah" and it is the equivalent of pushing the garage door button. I wish that I could say "open the garage" and "close the garage" and I could only open if the door was closed but that requires inputs which Amazon does not support.
Admittingly, there are some security concerns because theoretically someone could stand outside of my house and yell the activation words and the garage door would open but they would have to yell pretty loud and know the activation words that I selected. It also won't work if the wifi in your house is down and sometimes the Alexa app on your car is glitchy. And of course, I have no idea what Amazon Alexa features are available in your country but perhaps it is an option.

We have a Chamberlain / Liftmaster rolling code garage door opener that is fairly recent and has features such as app control via Internet connectivity, autoclose, wireless keypad, etc.
The G87 homelink mirror remote works fine with it. |

In my case it’s a building gate, if internet is to be believed it might be the only system that doesn’t work with any universal opener and homelink. Literally the only way is with an original remote. I also looked into one of those solutions that plugs into a cigarette lighter, but no luck..

Pretty sure it’s the same mirror found in the X3, X4, X5 M3, you could probably find a used one on eBay and fit it. My guess would be it takes power from the same harness that already powers the mirror. In my Mini, and a few other BMW’s I didn’t have to retrofit any wiring. Just plug and play.
