Don't under estimate the value of the lens that comes with the camera. 18-55 is not the most useful focal range, but it lets you learn to use the camera, and it's not bad for indoor shooting.

its a great lens but like you said, for ppl who want to learn and for indoor use. but if u want to go semi-pro u need at least a macro and a telephoto

i just bought a d40 2 days ago... so far i love it.. ritz camera had a special on it...a travel bag... the d40 with two lenses and two dvd's for 599.00
