Dealer Break-in Service or Joy Ride?

Took my G87 in for the 1,200 mile break-in service. When I picked it up I noticed that both seats were way out of position, very low and pushed back. When I checked the app, I see the following: 3.6 miles, 12 minutes, 17.9 mph average and 11.5 mpg.

Is it standard practice for dealers to take cars out for "test drives" for a standard service like this? Curious about other member experiences.

Just had my break in service done yesterday. Only noted drive by the dealer was 0.4 miles to their garage from the dealer lot. 6 mph average. Your BMW app will show you the exact path they took.

The trip data doesn't indicate any hooning around in the car. Just a 3.6 mile drive on surface streets.

But is a drive after 1200 mile break-in service standard practice? I don't know.

But I looked through my service history file of my 2023 M2.

2023/01/05: Oil/filter service. Odo: 647. Miles driven: 0
2023/05/31: Break-in Service. Odo: 1204. Miles driven: 3
2023/06/07: Tire repair. Odo: 1636. Miles driven: 9
2023/07/26: Tire repair. Odo: 3216. Miles driven: 4
2023/09/21: Oil/filter service. Odo: 4833. Miles driven: 2
2024/03/19: CBS service. Odo: 7196. Miles driven: 3

And my 2024 BMW 230xi.

2023/12/13: Oil/filter service. Odo: 624. Miles driven: 0
2024/01/13: Oil/filter service. Odo: 1799. Miles driven: 1
2024/03/15: Rear tire replaced. Odo: 3259. Miles driven: 4

In the case of the M2 and the break-in service a bit of a road test might be called for.

As for the two tire repairs, I imagine the car was driven after to confirm to some suitable level of confidence the repair was good, the tire was able to hold pressure.

The 2 miles after an oil/filter service is well not that onerous.

And the 3 miles after the 1st CBS service (due on time not miles) again a bit of a road test might be called for.

The 230xi didn't get driven that much after two oil/filter services. But it did get driven 4 miles after a rear tire was replaced due to a puncture.

Run flat tire but I didn't drive it flat. I aired it up to nearly 36psi before I drove the car 5 miles to the dealer during which time it lost 5psi. The amount of air it lost in that short time/drive suggested the puncture was severe. (I had both rear tires of the M2 repaired by both tires were losing just a psi or so every few days.) I agreed with the SA's recommendation to replace the tire rather than repair it. Fortunately the other tire's tread depth was still enough that the other tire didn't have to be replaced to keep the tread depth of the two tires within spec: 30% or less tread depth difference.

I think mine had about 3 mi on it after the break-in service iirc. Nothing I would stress over.

Driving after a tyre repair is probably to get the tyre pressure monitor to reset and show all pressure are correct, to avoid customer complaints of a warning light on the dash.

No, they just give the car back to you without checking any of the work they've done.

For just the break-in service anything beyond 0.5km is unreasonable (they should only be manoeuvring the car in their parking lot).

If they performed an alignment, for example, then they’ll road test. Provided the car is cold and the car is being driven in traffic, mpg will be very low.
Break-in includes diff fluid replacement. I’d sure hope they drove the car for a short amount of time to make sure there are no issues and to verify that it’s topped off.

The cars been out for a year now - almost everyone who wanted to take it out for a spirited drive already has by now. Think you're okay. Enjoy it!

My dealer doesn't wash cars but I do get offered a free car wash coupon after every dealer service visit. I don't take it as I have no desire to use a drive though car wash.

The car gets vacuumed and maybe the driver's seat is moved but I have seat position tied to the key and the seat is correctly positioned when I get in the car.

Won’t speak to other dealers, but my Arizona tech, at the 1200 mile service, shot a video while the car was on the lift.

He pointed out every inspection area in the 3+ minute video which was emailed to me prior to checking out at the front desk.

Gotta love that.

Mine did the same. Sent a link to the vid. Basically a walk through inspection. AZ also but this was Chapman Chandler I think you said yours was North Scottsdale?

Sometimes a road test is needed for verification. If diff fluid was replaced I could see a need for a quick drive to get it worked in. A few miles could literally be around the block depending on traffic pattern.

I'd be much more worried if it said 3.6 miles and 4 minutes rather than 12 minutes. I suspect as outlined above they were getting the diff fluid up to temp and making sure everything was running properly. These cars are special to us as well, but to someone who's worked in a dealership in any capacity for any amount of time, they are just widgets to them. Imagine in a week how many different BMWs the folks in the service department drive one of these...not denying the fact that occasionally one will be truly taken for an inappropriate joyride, but the dealer doesn't want that sort of thing happening.
