DIY M 50th Anniv self-leveling center caps
I know - totally nerdy, but hey, I love these floating center caps. Had them on my F87 (standard BMW roundel) and I wanted to continue with them on my soon-to-be-delivered G87.
But for these, I replaced the standard roundel with the 50th Anniv roundel. And yes, I know a certain vendor sells these. Did you catch the price? Yeah - that. https://youtube.com/shorts/9VrhWEWkbR8?feature=share I should have taken pics on how to do the swap, but it's easy to do & figure out how to remove/replace. You'll need a thin pry tool, 3M adhesion promoter & a STRONG double-sided tape. And a little care & patience. Buy a set of 50th Anniv center caps (36125A57484) Buy a set of self-leveling center caps (36122455268) Remove the 50th Anniv roundel from the fixed center caps. It is friction fitted (no adhesive) & has 3 very small tabs around the underside edge that fit into tiny slots on the plastic cap. Find a space between the tabs & lift up on the edge. Insert a thin pry tool in the gap you create & slowly, carefully lift the roundel so you don't bend it. It's thin metal. Slowly work towards one of the tabs & eventually it will give & let go. Work your way around the cap to free each tab. Apply some 3M adhesion promoter to the underside perimeter of the roundel. The floating cap only attaches by the edge, not the center of the cap. Disassemble the floating cap. Start by removing the small center pin - do not lose it. You can use the pry tool to get under it & it pops off. The weight that levels the caps is held in place by a spindle with a lip on it & a split down the middle. Squeeze the spindle to close the gap & the weight can then be removed. Now you can remove the spinning cap. You need to remove it so you can remove the roundel - do not try to remove the roundel without removing the entire cap or you risk breaking the spindle. The BMW roundel is attached to the plastic cap with thin layer of glue. Pry off the cap from the housing by working around the edge. Now, pry off the BMW roundel from the cap. You will likely ruin/bend this cap - no biggie, you won't be using it. Scrape off any white glue residue from the plastic cap with your fingernail. Easily comes off. Clean the cap edge with isopropyl alcohol. Apply 3M adhesion promoter to the cap edge & then, double sided tape. Remove protector strip from tape & apply the 50th Anniv roundels. Reassemble the floating center cap. All 4 took 20 minutes, tops. Enjoy!
