Kyostar Intake and Inlet Install

Hello friends, I had no plans of installing an intake anytime soon.

However, as I was window shopping AliExpress for the usual assortment of G42 goods, I took notice of the exact same intake being sold by about 5 different companies/websites.

I of course liked the idea of getting basically the exact same intake that MST or IAW currently sells for our cars at a much better price.

The only caveat with AliExpress oftentimes is their very expensive overseas shipping. A $230 intake can become a $350 intake by the time you factor shipping in. So at that point, you might as well go with a US / Europe based company.

Long story short, I found the AliExpress seller on Ebay. Free shipping.
Win/Win.

Install was straight forward. Taking off the stock intake couldn't have been easier. Getting the stock inlet off however takes a lot more careful attention and patience.

Likewise, installing the new inlet takes a lot of finesse and patience. YOU CAN EASILY BREAK THE PVC BREATHER TUBE. Fair warning.

Getting everything together takes a bit of adjusting and finagling. Do not attempt to strongarm the pieces into place. Tighten the hose clamps last, and tighten down the heat shield box last. Don't over-tighten the new inlet hose clamp to the plastic turbo connection. I didn't use any power tools.

A big thanks to MPR for his help! He was kind enough to answer all my questions and even post excellent photos.

Looks good I believe another member is running the same intake. Always fun finding a good deal and it working out.

Full Disclosure :

I took the intake off, and went back to stock.

Not because I had any issues, but simply because I wanted to put the superior quality stock BMW airbox back in.

And something else that I was never crazy about - the silicone inlet pipe (tube). With the angle of the install , the silicone inlet gets a very slight kink in it. And at it's narrowest point, it is either narrower or about the same size as the factory inlet pipe, so it's not even flowing more than stock.

Also, the Kyostar airbox would get very hot to the touch. And I could also smell the hot silicone after hard driving. With 120 degree summers coming up, I would feel even less confident in the aftermarket intake.

After removing all the parts, everything still looked fine and in good condition.

I will very likely get a quality aftermarket cold-air intake kit in the future.

TL/DR - Went back to the stock airbox simply because of the superior factory fit and quality

From what I've heard the only reason to go aftermarket is for sound. There is no HP boost so it seems like more risk than worth to me.

And that was really the only net benefit - the sound.

And typically, the stereo / subwoofer is usually up loud enough to where I didn't even usually hear the intake anyway.

And I'm sure I'm just imagining it, but it seems like it pulls smoother throughout the entire powerband with the stock airbox.... If that makes sense.

Like I said, I didn't have any quality issues with the aftermarket intake for what it is, but I would rather just feel confident in the factory airbox that was perfectly designed and engineered for the car.

Yep. Dynos have revealed an only 3 - 5 hp gain (which is essentially nothing). And even a loss of 3 - 5 ft. lbs of torque.

Depending on the quality of the filters, the numbers will change.

I have seen dynos with 5-10 HP & torque increase with an intake only on the B58

Very good point. And that's another net positive of going with a well-known company. The odds of them having a better filter go up, versus buying the cheapest thing you can find

Most use pretty cheap filters.

I replaced my MST filter with a huge pro ram filter. It’s a very popular mod for more heavily modified b58s.

You could do the same with your kyostar. Just replace the filter and you are golden.

The filter is must larger and incredibly high quality and has a massive velocity stack.

The proram medium 4” is the one that fits the mst and similar intakes. Also get the silicon and clamps with it.

This is not where I got it from, I ordered it right from proram in England but this has some good pics of it: https://europerformancecenter.com/pr...pr_seq=uniform
