Break-in @ 400 miles?

I dropped the car at the dealer to deal with the headlight situation and they said the computer is telling them I can do the break-in now at just over 400 miles. I am inclined to wait until I get closer to 1000 miles. The dealer is close and there are things to do by them.

Does it matter? 400 vs 1000 or 1200 range?

As a side issue they gave me a M440 loaner - the car I was originally thinking about getting - the M440 Grand Coupe (wanted ventilated seats) I have to say the G80 is TWICE the car for 20% more cash as I speced them. In a vacuum I am sure I would have been happy with the M light but now I would be pissed spending incrementally less for a far inferior machine. Granted the loaner is set to Eco (M3 mostly Efficient pre break-in) but I hit the brakes and though WTF why I am not stopping...... Just saying they are worlds apart and I would either go cheap with the 430 GC or the M3. Thats just me.
Driving the M440 made me feel really good about the G80.

I would not want it done that early unless those 400 miles were spread out over a year or more.

Too soon. Wait for at least 1k. If you’ve had it for many months and dragging ass putting miles on it, get out and drive it more to get to the right mileage and then do the service and dillydally after that if you want.

The computer will always say break-in is due at 1200 miles from the factory until it's cleared after service. You don't want to do it at 400 though, like Swank said, wait until 1k+

Trying to figure out why they need to keep your car due to the headlight ‘crack’.

Because the "BWM" corporate "engineers" need to "asses". They seem to "show up" at their "pleasure".

Yeah, I’d wait to. The idea is to break the engine in which requires miles to allow shavings etc to settle into the oil. PS, I went from a M240 to a M440, biggest mistake of my life with the exception of my first marriage! Then I went from a M440 to my current M4 convertible, feels so much better!! Enjoy your ride, fun fun fun cars to drive!!

The idiot service writer should very well know that a run in service will show due even at 1 mile on the odometer… it’s yellow on the service screen from the day it comes out of the factory. it should not be done until at least 1000 miles minimum.

I wonder why the computer would even say change at 400 miles.

If you read some of the other comments...and owned the car...you'd know it will *always* show it due at 1200 miles from mile 1 at the factory. It's just how the system is programmed.

Ok, fair enough, let me step back for a second--and share my POV. I bought my 2023 X5MC used with 2,000 miles...so the 1,200 break in service was done before my time and therefore, I never saw any "warnings". I was under the impression that I had purchase this one new, I would have seen a visual warning at the 1,200 miles for the break-in service. But, if I understand your issue correctly, your break in service warning showed at 400 miles, not 1,200. Was that your case?

^^^ No, the idiot service advisors at the dealer misunderstood stuff they don’t pay attention to in training and misinformed the customer.

Your language is a bit confusing. You're saying that you thought you purchased this new or are you asking if you *had* purchased it new would you have seen the warning? The answer to the former is...I don't know what you say to that, but if you meant the latter, then yes.

All M cars have the 1200 mile break-in service warning on from the factory at mile 0. You'd have seen it from delivery until you got it done and the warning is cleared per break-in service instructions.

Sorry, about that...yes, Had I purchased it new, I would have seen the 1200 mile break-in service warning. But, I did not buy it new, and thus I did not see the warning since the service was done by the previous owner.

Coming back to your vehicle, since you bought yours new, your break-in service warning should have shown at the1200 miles, but it didnt. It showed at the 400 miles. My only question is, why did it show at the 400 miles and not at the 1200 miles like it should have been.

I think you're very quite confused about this thread, where am I commenting here, and...I don't know, some other stuff.

Let me recap:

The OP of this thread (who is, in fact, not me) said, when they brought their car in for service for something completely unrelated to break-in, the dealer offered to perform the break-in service **simply because** the computer said it was due for (break-in) service.

What the person at the dealer did not understand was the car will *always* display the break-in service reminder from the factory until it's done and the warning is cleared. The warning says that the service is due at 1200 miles and is, again, always there at mile 0 until mile 1200 or whenever the service is performed.

If you want to talk about my own personal car, I also saw the service indicator from when I picked up the car all the way until I did the break-in service at like 1050 miles or something. Mile 6 through 1050. You, having purchased your car used after the break-in service was performed, would not have seen it since clearing the warning is part of the break-in service.

Make sense?

Correct Berzerker - I was at the dealership service center with 400 miles on the od and they said "The computer is telling us we can do the break-in now".

The car computer is doing the countdown it last said 200 miles to break-in.

I am @ 1063 and am bringing it in on Thursday. Can you go to jail for speeding in Nassau County?
