It is utter and complete madness.
It basically started post-depression as a way for restaurant owners to get out of paying employees and it just stayed afterward. We have a bad habit of just going, "well that is how we always did it"

It's the samewith the wage stagnation issue, its been going on for DECADES here, wages haven't kept up with inflation forever so you're poorer for making more money. Everyone feels it but when you talk about changing it its:

1. Don't upset the system (south park had a good one about treating the economy like a vengeful god)
2. back in my day we survived for 3 months on 2 bits and a goats testicle and , by god, you can too! (ignoring the fact that the cost of an average house back then was like $3k and, adjusted for inflation, should only cost about $46k today, cost of education has increased 600% in the past 30 years, etc)
3. MARXISM, SOCIALISM, SOMESCARYISMIDONTACTUALLYKNOWWHATWORDSMEAN!

All while some of us are making more by simply HAVING money than we are going to our jobs (but I still gotta go to work).

A few days ago I tipped a mover $50 bucks cash because I felt bad for him and he happily took it, while hiding from me that his company was going to charge me way over the estimate. The company he is contracted with isn't answering my calls or responding to my emails. He ghosted me as well.

Not feeling sorry for and tipping these chumps ever again. They're shady and not forthcoming. I also never tip more than 15% tip at restaurants.

Ba humbug indeed.

Before the pandemic there were a select few restaurants bucking this trend but now, at least in Atlanta, Im seeing more and more. They still accept tips in a lot of them but its pooled tips and they pay a real wage, some just added a service charge to the bill up front and said dont tip.

One thing I have noticed is those restaurant owners arent the ones I hear complaining about how they cant get anyone to work there. My favorite does the "base plus" model of a full wage for everyone and then all the non management staff pools whatever tips were left and they have almost all of the same employees pre-pandemic thanks to more stable wages.

I know a lot of the waitresses from the trendy places and they never returned. They all went to school, had other careers, but fell into service because a hot chick bartending can make BANK. But when COVID hit they realized its not a guarantee and a lot fell back onto their original career path and, especially being slightly older, like getting a consistent check every two weeks.

I'm not a huge fan of tipping either to be honest. Having said that if everyone was paid what the self entitled millennials call "a living wage", the price of everything would be much higher and I am not sure we'd all be happy about that either. I don't have an answer for this frankly, when I think of someone working in McDonalds etc for minimum wage that seems fair, when I see how physically hard my movers worked minimum wage seems low. I think hard work should be rewarded fairly and some minimum wages are fairly paid.
Exactly. Tipping has gotten ridiculous in this country. I'm basically asked on the credit card machine to tip everytime I do a carry out order at a restaurant. When COVID was going on, I understood. However, so many places have kept this and are exploiting the whole idea of tipping at this point just to pad profits….because, well, you know….inflation and everyone has money to spend.

I'm accepting cash tips for this post, as well. Thanks.

I never tip for takeout and never will. They are literally putting my food in a box. Most of the people who work takeout also get minimum wage so they’re not working off of tips.

Call the old credit card company and dispute, I'll bet they call you back.

I had a plumber one time try to charge me 2 hours for a job. I was nice and signed the work order and immediately called the office, because they call you to let you know the guy will be there in 10-15.

I said, "She when you called? She what time it is now? He's trying to charge almost an hour more time and he's done." $150/hr for nothing is something up with which I will not put. They corrected it, no idea if the guy still works there.

As for the movers? "Thanks guys" maybe a bottle of water. I'm not buying into this I need to tip everyone on the damn planet BS.

Although the movers I used for this place maybe, they didn't charge by the hour, but by the item. Better believer those guys were HUSTLING.

Yeah I disputed the amount I felt cheated out of and after the bank's investigation I got my money back.

Sucks you even had to do that in the first place. That's why I use my credit card for everything down to a burger now.

In 2003 my wife and I moved from Maryland to Oregon. The estimated weight was far less than the actual weight -- like 2,000 pounds off -- and we felt bad for the guys and tipped them a couple of hundred dollars, if memory serves. Otherwise, put me in the "minimal tip" category.

I moved frequently while in the Navy and never tipped at all.

Hear, hear..I moved 14 times in 30 yrs of Service. Zero tips. In about 60% of all moves, I ended up with something in my household goods broken. Don't miss those move days.

Price charged by removal company is the price and the move people get paid their share so in cash strapped GB it's a cup of tea and sandwiches for the move chaps after the move and I believe in aussie land it's the same too.
